Essential must-have software?

well as it will be a new mini there won't be much stuff on it and i already have 2.5" caddy that i can put the new drive into for the backup but at least once its done it all i have to do is open up the mini and install the new drive and ram at the same time.

will that backup to a new drive without a format or will i need to do that first ? never used a mac

Plug the new drive in, format it and then run the copy.
