Anyone here an estate agent?

Been offered an interview on friday and wouldn't mind giving it a go.

The job is paying about £14000 more than what i earn now.

**If I sell 6 houses a month

I used to do it. Wasn't bad and the psychological part is interesting. Lots of outright liars in the business and most customers are time wasters who never intend to buy a house. It's long hours and most people leave after a couple of years from what I've seen.

Don't want to put you off, you'll learn a lot, but the money isn't guaranteed and you'll probably move on, especially if you have no interest and just want to try it out.

Its heavily commission based so will be surprised (but happy for you!) if you've found someone to start you on £30k bassic (to be £14k more than any job). The markets are still very slow and banks reluctant to lend. If you've not done it before I'd tread carefully, couple of my mates are mortgage advisors and they're struggling, which would suggest agents are too.

As Ramsay's kitchen nightmares shows about the restaurant trade, I can't imagine being an estate agent is all kirsty and phil! :o

My mothers best friend is working as an estate agent at the moment, she says its the most miserable time she's had in her life.
To be fair though, she did start just before and has been doing it right through the recession etc. Can imagine it being tedious.

Give it a go, never know you may like it. If you don't like it secure another a job and quit. Is only a job after all and giving it a go is worth the jump up in pay for sure. :D

Oh dear....is that what everyone is saying?? ha!
Really does go to show that you are as good as you believe you are!!!

Eh? Makes no sense to me! Have you had a few shandies or hit the pipe hard tonight?

If you are trying to say you are an estate agent and doing well then good on you, I was simply offering my opinion from speaking to my mates in that trade.

My folks run their own agency, the most they've ever paid anyone as a base salary was 20k and there were reasons why it was relatively high for this kind of thing.

Still decent money to be made but I will say it does depend on the area and the agency, some are decent, a lot are total crooks.

How could I get into this? Any specific qualifications required? Or is it a more 'who you know' type operation?

doubt its either tbh...

tis one of those high turnover jobs which anyone can get but only a few will probably be particularly good at

perhaps a small local estate agent is different but I know at least one person who worked at foxtons and its basically setup for hardcore sales people - lots of money if you're good though most people aren't...

Not at all, I am and yes im doing very well :D

Your 'mates' clearly aren't!

I was a negotiator for an estate agent in north london years ago. Did it for about a year or two and got out. Didn't enjoy it, wasn't very good at it anyway,
and got sick of spending weeks on sales where buyers pull out and I don't get commission. Never did like the 'shark' status associated with estate agents.

However, you might do really well if you're commited, don't mind working long hours, and have the gift of the gab. The owner of the agent I worked for wanted to be a millionaire before he was 30, and he's a multi millionaire now.

Atm im only working part time. £400 a month ! :(:( so thats like £4800 a year . . .which is ridiculous, this job has a basic salary of £20000, which is why i said the £16000 increase in money.

Messing with the valuations of the biggest investment most people ever make, for a few extra quid in the pay packet.

From my experience it's the vendors who mess with prices, they always think they know how much their place is worth and won't put it on for anything else. Even if it is way too much money...
