Hi,

I'm looking for a decent estate car for between 13-14 grand with 60k or less on the clock and Manual. Family of 4 so needs to be spacious and reliable - but I'm trying hard to find something that isn't desperately bland.

Some I've considered so far are Passat, Golf, Mondeo, Focus, Leon, i40, Octavia and now the Insignia.

The Insignia is by far the best looking to me but there's something in my mind telling me it's a bad idea. I've never driven one but it does seem to offer a lot for the money and has decent power. These are the one's I'm interested in:

Firstly what general advice do you have for any of the cars above (or any others for that matter)?

Secondly why should I not buy the Insignia?

Thanks

My partner had a 2017 model like the one in your first link. Loads of space, fairly comfy, performance was okay, fuel economy was in the 50's with her driving. Really wasn't that bad at all

I've got a Passat 2.0 TDI 150ps. It's an insanely practical and economical car. Did over 1000 miles last week and was averaging 77mpg. Spec is ok. If I had the money I would have gone for a Superb but they are a bit more expensive and definitely more of a barge to manoeuvre. Leather seats in mine are worth having imo and basic specs are decent.

Recently made a similar choice. My final shortlist was between a Volvo v60, Skoda Octavia/superb and the Leon estate fr.

Went for a v60 in the end. Seemed the best spec/comfort for the money. So far (10k miles later, no regrets!)

On paper the Superb is.... superb but it is pretty bland. It was a suggestion I put to my wife but she was underwhelmed by it at the dealership, which surprised me a bit as she's not 'into' cars and has never had anything special.

Also, £14k won't get you a good one. It will either be a 1.6 Diesel in S trim, or very old. And a 9 year old diesel with under 60k on the clock would worry me a bit.
