Estimated for an MOT + full service - does this sound like a rip off, or reasonable?

Yeah, I think the main issue is that this garage seems to use the expensive brands for parts.

Wonder if it's worth asking whether I could buy cheaper branded filters myself and ask them to use those instead, or is that not a done thing?

I always supply the parts to my local garage but not all garages will agree to that. No harm in asking

If you had oil and filter done last month and the air filter and pollen filter were done 1 year /15,000 miles ago, then most of the list is a complete waste of money.

"They also insist on a full service for new customers/vehicles that haven't been serviced by them before."

This just sounds like rip-off nonsense, take it somewhere else that'll actually just do the work that needs doing.

I don't think the pricing is unreasonable. They are a business, and they do have to make a profit. Some parts might be cheaper elsewhere, but their pricing is not unreasonable or excessive. The key thing is you feel they are a decent garage and do a good job, and provide decent customer service.

I do agree with you, though to be honest, this is just an estimate, so they may take things off the final quote if they aren't needed? Just an assumption

I've been to this garage in the past for some unrelated damage repair. They initially quoted high for all parts that may be needed in a worst case scenario, but in the end after repairing, they didn't need two of the initially quoted parts. They took those two parts off the final quote and I only paid for paint & materials, labour and vat.

First time asking this garage for a service though.

I think that all sounds very reasonable, garages wont be scratching around to get the cheapest price on every part, they'll just go to their usual motor factors and buy it all in from them. They'll also just use brands they know they don't have issues with such as NKG plugs and Mahle filters.

I really don't think they're pulling anyone's pants down with what they've quoted, they're a business who needs to make reliable money who can't spend ages chasing each part from different suppliers.

If you want the best possible price on every component then sure go for it and spend a few hours searching around but for different brands and the best prices and do it all yourself.

I've been paying over £45 for my MOTs for over five years now, last one was £48.

They are open on Saturday morning though, when I book in, and they aren't too picky pointing out a decat on the exhaust manifold so I'll keep returning.

Absolutely this.
Who cares if they’re a few quid more expensive than the next garage if you’re getting good and honest service.
You’ll not only save money over the long term, but your sanity will stay in check.
If some garages offer free MOT’s, cheap servicing etc, then you can bet your ass that they’ll recoup the money somehow.

They also insist on a full service for new customers/vehicles that haven't been serviced by them before.

I did actually have my oil and oil filter changed last month by a different garage, IIRC was different oil and filter than the ones quoted in the OP.

Would it be reasonable to ask them to take the oil and oil filter off the quote, considering it's been changed only a few weeks ago? I guess then it wouldn't be considered a "full service" in their eyes.
TBH just get an MOT wherever you like and follow up on getting it fully serviced once you've covered whatever the service interval in your car is.

To get the elements of a full service done (spark plugs etc.) without swapping the every service essentials of the oil and filter would be a bit odd.

Have you checked Kia dealers? If it's anything like when I had my Hyundai they offer decent priced servicing once you're outside the first 5(?) years.
I was never able to really find it cheaper anywhere else and they threw in a years RAC/AA cover.

Id say thats reasonable price

Garages are not going to buy them at cost price and sell to you for the same price, they will always mark up them to make some money back on each item

rip off. Even the rip off merchants kwik fit are quoting £290 for a full service and MOT

£238 here for full service and MOT

Another quoting from £235 for a major service here, so with MOT about £290

definitely a rip off !

I'd pay no more than £250 for the service, leaving the cost inc MOT at about £300. £430 is definitely a rip off.

Yeah, I get that, I've checked the big brands too. However, that £290 for a full service and MOT at Kwik Fit doesn't include 2 things that the quote by garage in OP does - brake fluid change and spark plugs. I think typically they aren't included in full services - they are usually separate.

Mr Clutch, another big brand, also quotes around £267 for a full service and MOT, but again doesn't include brake fluid change and spark plugs. These are additional costs.

Brake fluid change at Kwik Fit is £50. Spark plugs, not sure, I'd have to enquire, but let's just assume the same of around £94. Once you factor in the additional costs, I'd actually end up paying around the same or a bit more than the garage in the OP, as KF charges more for brake fluid change.

Whether I need those additional things done, I can't say at the moment.

I checked my local Kia dealer and they quoted me £518 for an MOT and full service...

Why that high I have no idea

@Nabinium What was the work you actually asked for before they pushed this "if it's the first time with us it must be a full service" nonsense on you? Presumably you didn't ask for oil and filter etc. given you had that done last month?

I actually just asked for a "service and MOT". I completely forgot about the oil and filter last month, so I failed to mention it at the time. But yeah, I think I ought to have been more specific when they said that full service first time guff.

Edit: max number of 15 posts :(
