Hi

I am currently in the process of setting up esxi 6

I would like to run the following VM’s

PF Sense – LAN – WAN – Wireless (OPT)

Windows 10 pro

The motherboard has a gig network port

Also I have an intel card with 4 ports

I would like the management port on the mb network port

PF Sense each using 3 ports on the network card

And maybe the windows 10 vm using a separate port on the network,

Any ideas on the best way to achieve the above?

Thanks very much

This would be done as simply as setting ESXi to use the MB port as management and then assigning the interfaces to the VM's as required.

There is no complicated config to do this.

thanks at the minute it has created a vlan within esxi just showing the one card, would i need to create seperate vlans for each port? thanks again

You could or you could just create a separate vswitch as required.

This is my basic setup (jupitergate is pfsense which has a direct link from the vdsl modem):

ah that may be a good idea, i suppose i could add assign an extra network card to the vswitch0 to increase bandwidth?

i was going to connect a wireless ap to one of the ports so wireless traffic is handled by pfsense also, would i have to create a separate vswitch for that to?

Thanks!

Yes you can assign more than one NIC to a vswitch and setup load balancing. I wouldn't expect to see benefits unless you're shifting a lot of data to multiple VMs at once. If nothing else it can be used as redundancy.

I haven't used wireless with pfsense but I expect that would work fine. As it's an access point I would have thought you could just plug it into your physical switch though?

Yeah i think that would be simpler.

Instead of an AP if you had a pci-e wireless adapter in the host you could pass it through directly to pfsense and it would broadcast the SSID etc for you.

I have enabled modem mode on my vom superhub and connected it to my pfsense wan connection

Pf sense doesn't seem to detect the IP address and I cannot browse the net

Any ideas?

I've not used VM for a while but it used to be the case that you had to reboot the everything in a particular order to begin with:

Unplug the modem: plug in the pfSense, wait until it's fully booted.
Connect the network cable from pfSense to the modem.
Plug in the modem.
