okay, this is in relation to the tills that i use at work.

we have just moved a till system to a seperate area of the building. unfortunately the wireless connection is not strong enough to get a decent signal, and slows down the whole network.

i have had 2 cat 5 cables run from the router to a double socket in this seperate area. in theory, all i need to do is plug till into network socket. NO. the drivers for the ethernet controller are not installed. i have attempted an online update (having moved the till back and connected by wireless) but still no joy.

in the details tab, the manufacturer is listed as unknown.

i have tried contacting the company the till came from, but got voicemail, and i am quite desperate to get this working asap. is there any way i can find out more details about the controller, and get hold of the drivers, or perhaps a generic driver that i could try out.
any assistance is greatly appreciated.

move the wireless ? or is this not possible ? what o/s is on the tills? what network card is in the till do you know?

wireless is not possible to be moved any closer than it already is.

o/s is xp pro sp2

havent got a clue about the network card. all the ports are 'built in' to the unit, when i go through device manager
device type: other devices
device manufacturer: unknown
location: pci bus 0, device 9, function 0

it is enabled, i have attempted roll back driver (and there are none to roll back to), tried uninstall and do it that way. update through internet connection. still no joy.

What is the till make, part number?

You could try running a utility that lists components. Try using UBCD, and run Astra or Aida.
This may tell you at least who makes the chip.

I used to work for a company that made and supported tills just as you have decribed.

when you purachsed these tills did they come with a helpdesk/on site support contract?? If so you should really get them to make any changes like this other wise they might well charge you for any changes you do make.

If however you don't have the support you have 2 real options.

1, Buy a wireless access point and put it inbetween the wireless router and the tills, thus increasing the range.

2, Enable the on board network port. This might prove to be hard as the company who supplied the tills might have locked it down so you can't make these sort of changes.

If you can make administrator changes I'd suggest finding out what chip set you have.

El_Watcher makes a good point, if you know the manucafuter and model number you could well look it up online (ie, NCR 7402) and find the information needed.

have you looked at the link El_Watcher provided???

edit: have you checked the bios to make sure the on borad lan is enabled??
