Im currently using the thernet connection my university halls. The internet is working but messenger wont log-in. When I run a troobleshooter, it says that the default gateway is offline.

Any ideas how I get around this?

Well the Defeault Gateway is Offline because MSN is using your old Internet Settings?
Maybe uninstall and reinstall it?

a lot of halls run their own msn server or something very similar, so if your version isn't the same you won't be able to log on. I know this used to be a problem when my mates stayed in halls in aberdeen. Have any of your mates got MSN working?

Yea, theirs are working fine. I'm using msn live messenger. Should I try downloading an older version?

try a reformat of your pc if you can, i had a similar problem when my msn suddenly stopped working at uni, other people's were fine

Ah, I just cant justify the hassle for that.

Surely there must be some way round it. I'm only using the Ethernet/LAN connection, could it be something to do with my other network connections that Im not using?

I was using BT home hub before coming down to uni.

Check the connection settings...you may need to input your uni's proxy server :)

Call the helpdesk - they'll almost certainly be able to, er, help :)

Where would I find the uni's proxy server?

The help desk would usually have to tell you the information for that, you could find out what version of msn your mates have running and give that a go?
