Evening.
I have an Asus b760 board which likes to randomly disconnect the 2.5gigabit ethernet periodically. Which has slowly ****** me off.

Apparently it's "a thing" according to the internet. I've spent ages trying things that haven't worked.

I have 900mb broadband but have frequently got above 1gigabit.

My pc is in a small case so I've no room for a network card as it would block the fans on my GPU.

Can anyone recommend a solution?

danke schön.

Would a usb to Ethernet adapter work - 3.0 I believe is rated upto 1gig? Quick Google seems to suggest so but obviously hold off for more knowledgeable replies.

I've used a variety of USB-A and USB-C to ethernet adapters over the years and all have worked perfectly on both windows and Apple laptops. One downside is that they generally don't support Wake On Lan, but not many people would use that feature anyway.

As bledd says, get the latest driver first. The I225-V through rev B2 were still 'broken' though, and fixed finally in rev B3 (and rebranded I226-V). If you get a USB dongle after all, look for one with the BG chip not the older B chip - the BG runs much cooler and uses less energy. I know uGreen's adapter is BG, not sure on others.

Got one. Took a bit of setting up in Linux, didn't seem to want to run at full speed for some reason. Was getting 300Mbps. Seems ok now though, done a few speed tests - +900.
