Ive been trying to get an ethernet connection on my bros p5k and its not working. Hes on sky broadband and im wondering if its something in the bios that needs setting. Hes on windows xp fresh install so sp2 only at the mo.
The green lights are on on the router but orange light on the mobo ethernet port
Any help would be great

Go to device manager and check the driver is installed correctly. Might be worth getting the latest one off t'internet.

It is possible it needs to be enabled in the BIOS but only if someone has gone out of their way to disable it.

Tried a different network cable?

Device manager says its fine and there are no newer drivers according to auto update.
Havent tried a different cable though. The bios hasnt been touched

If it appears in device manager then it is probably ok. Might be worth reinstalling the driver to see if it gives it a kick in the backside.

New cable would be my next step.

The port lights light up green if a 1000 Mbps connection is detected and orange for 100 Mbps connections

Check your IP settings: open a command prompt (Start - Run: cmd). Type: ipconfig

What does it say under Local Area Connection for - IP address, subnet mask and default gateway.

Ive just been back over with my laptop and router and hes only getting 56ish still.
Im on sky and a lot further from the exchange than he is and im getting 450ish
I think its a sky problem not his stuff
