The real question is can the money invested in GPUs be used to mine any other crypto efficiently such that the value of the currency exceeds the cost of the power/cooling. The answer right now might be no but with such a large investment in eth you have to wonder if a sufficient number of miners swap to another currency can they artifically inflate the value of it through their own collective action.
Fingers crossed that it just means a flood of GPUs on the secondary market, but even then I suspect that due to the shortages being so acute that many of them will be selling for over inflated prices anyway.

ETH might be most profitable but there's plenty enough profit in mining other coins once ETH ends. The question is once ETH mining ends and the hash power moves over to the others, does it dilute the payments to a level where it is not profitable with the other coins?
there are still plenty of coins about to mine, maybe not as profitable atm as ETH, but once ETH goes to POW, then some of those other coins could be pushed up to profitable, so it isnt all over as of yet, i only just just started mining last couple of months with my gpu, only because my vega wasnt cutting it in games any more and i wanted to upgrade, but obvoiously that didnt happen, but looking at profitability calculator theres a few other coins that have profit
I hope so and that's my "gut" feeling.
Why I am holding off even though OCUK do have some actual stock at the moment.
I'm not THAT desperate my 1070 is still going ok.

Smart contracts make Ethereum somewhat different from the legion of useless altcoins floating around, which, bar a handful such as Monero, serve no realistic real-world use case and exist solely for people to speculate on.
i think folk are getting carried away with ETH gpu mining coming to an end, in short term means nothing for the gpu shortage and prices, they are not going to plummet overnight, plus as been said many time there are multiple coins that are profitable, maybe not the extent of ETH, but its still profit, they wont be a glut of cards chucked onto ebay overnight.

It's the environmental aspect that infuriates me. People just don't care. I'm definitely in the minority because I even pick peoples rubbish off the street instead of walking passed it like 99% of people do

Yeah you do have to be careful with peoples jobs. I'd never return somebody else's super market trolley for example because that would make people unemployed.
However, my local council is struggling for money so less litter on the streets would mean more funding for other things. Some public toilets in my area are closed because they can't afford cleaners to maintain them.

The production side of things needs to pick up really to combat miners buying cards but the future doesnt look very bright for the next few years we need pre-2020 levels of production and I cant see it at the moment.

yep, me for one cant wait for a new gpu, but i wont pay insane prices in this current climate,so while i wait i mine with my one card to get some peniies ready for when the time comes
