This is very depressing news indeed.

It's a real contrast to the political narrative about Kosovo, where local self-determunation of a regional ethnic minority was supported by everyone from NATO to the EU.

As a famous man once said "who remembers the Armenians?"

It does seem like there are some strong parallels with Kosovo. Its sad but not unsurprising that nobody seems to support Armenia.

The cynic in me thinks that there aren't enough ulterior motives for certain countries to get involved unlike the former Yugoslavia.

Mr. Kardashian’s grandparents were Armenian.
When thinking of famous Armenians the first name that pops into my head is Serj Tankian lead singer of System of a Down.

From what I remember Nagorno-Karabakh is internationally recognised as a part of Azerbaijan but given the Armenians history I'm not surprised by how quickly they have fled the region.

Weren't Russia providing security for Armenia and now they are tied up needlessly trying to invade Ukraine, Azerbaijan has taken advantage of the power gap?

If it produces another good system of a down album it might be worth it.

But yes flippant comments aside it'd rather sad. Again more deaths and suffering. But these are not the newsworthy ones so who cares.

Nagorno Karabakh was ceded to Azerbaijan by the Soviet Union, despite being 90% Armenian.

That's very similar to the population split in Kosovo, which was undisputably part of a sovereign state (Serbia).

As I said, there is a strikingly different approach in those two examples.

Can't be upsetting Turkey nor rewarding states that choose Russia to safeguard their security.

Lack of involvement is involvement.

Does anyone actually care about upsetting Turkey?

Regarding Russia afaik they were assigned to peacekeeping duties there. Russia seem to flip flop on the support for either Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Yes, they do. Turkey has everyone over a barrel at the moment. Yesterday's antics in Syria show that they are able and willing to project force outside their boundaries.

Russia didn't support Armenia as the government has been making pro-western noises recently. Unfortunately for Armenia, their gamble didn't get them any Western support either. And here we are.

One of the things I find so bizarre about this is:

Russia invade Ukraine to annex territory because they owned until 30 years prior and think that gives them some right to it now: The world goes nuts and comes down on them like a ton of bricks (and rightly so).

Azerbaijan invades Armenia and annexes territory because they owned it a century ago and think that gives them some right to it now: Practically nobody cares, because they're a western ally.

It's especially interesting considering all the parallels between the Soviet states and the autonomous regions involved as the two situations heavily mirror one another.

this is Armenia + Azerbaijan thread
ain't researching Albania + Kosovo right now.
This may shock you but if you start a thread about Pepsi a lot of the conversation will revolved around Coca-Cola, that's how discussion topics work, things can be linked/relevant to the topic without being off-topic.

Ahh wasn't aware they were moving more towards the west. The Russian peacekeeping there seems standard in that they don't do much(might be a bit of a generalisation but I think that sentiment is shared by many).

Interesting that the Azeri President was supposed to be attending peace talks in Grenada but then pulled out at the last minute. According to the BBC the Azeris wanted Turkey at the talks but France and Germany said nope, so they walked. Saying that though I'm not sure what the point of the talks is, they already have what they want.

Now France are saying they will provide military support to Armenia.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned a small group of lawmakers last week that his department is tracking the possibility that Azerbaijan could soon invade Armenia, according to two people familiar with the conversation.

The call indicates the depth of concern in the administration about Azerbaijan’s operations against a breakaway region in the west of the country and the possibility of the conflict spreading.

Looks like more war is on the menu
