Etsy - Wifey's new thing

Likewise my wife has begun selling a Skincare range and using Facebook groups. She has to set up about 8 messages a day every day to try and get the best out of the group. Relying on members to join up and then join their friends up. She's doing well so far in the 2 months she's been active but there is probably a limit to the number of people buying at any time as either they're all stocked up or no birthdays/gifts at the time.

So your wife is in a MLM scheme then lol.

I've just started my own business selling some of my better photographs snd my mum's paintings. I did consider Etsy as an alternative to my own site, but in the end I wanted more control so I developed my own off the back of Woocommerce. (Recommended by the way if you want your own ecommerce site). The problem with your own site is traffic. So you've got the opposite problem with Etsy really. Too much competition, and too much traffic going all over the place. There seems to be a very fine line between the two. I'm still glad I opted for my own design, my own control, and bespoke look, but I haven't ruled out Etsy as well.

A for maintaining the website, yes it's a lot of work really, but not as much as developing it from the ground up. I'm finding the social media side of it almost a full time job in its own right. I've had some success with Facebook ads and one with Instangram (I'm on Instagram also) but word of mouth tends to be better on all couints.

But it is a slow buirner for sure.

Cheers, how did you get a design for your site? I'm tempted to go through something like fiver or another freelancing service to get it set up.

I did it myself more or less. You buy a template from the millions available and off you go. It's not overly complicated but it is extremely time consuming. It took me about 3 months to get where I am today, but I toyed with the idea for many more.

Cheers appreciated. It's quite challenging making sure it works on all platforms. The majority look at it on a mobile device, so you need to make sure your product "fits". That's quite difficult with artwork. Jewellery might be easier as its physically smaller. Something to consider if your wife wants to go down that direction.

Crikey, I see what you mean about clicking on other items. I just went to your wife's Etsy page, clicked on one of her items and then clicked on the cufflinks thinking they were hers. Quite confused for one minute. That other company has over 2500 sales, probably off the back of people's pages like your wife.

I don't have Etsy experience, but here is some marketing advice:

- Try and think of a niche product that you know there is some market for, and target that niche.

- Pinterest might help you a bit.

- Don't forget Amazon marketplace.

- Obviously the more marketing you can do, the better. Try some offline marketing as well. There are a lot of high-end local magazines that are glossy, so write a piece for that with some nice photos, and it might get you some sales (there might be a bit of cost for this though). Local press will probably help you out if you do a "local entrepreneur" type story.

- With silver, there is also potentially a new angle. This is that precious metals can act as a hedge against inflation. The economy is currently at risk of inflation. Maybe you can do something related to that somehow, e.g. a special jewellery piece.
