iPhone lightning connector was the common ‘reversible’ port before usb C was present on phones was it not? Not too bothered but seems a little harsh to force a company to change their product for no reason at all. I mean, the entire world of electronics isn’t going to suddenly adopt USB C universally, is it?
It was at the time yes. The USB C port wasn't released which left the A/B ports having to be inserted the correct orientation.
Lightning is now vastly inferior to USB C. But the real reason Apple should be forced to change their product is the sheer electronic waste as people swap from apple to Android et al and no longer have a use for their cable. At least the other way around you'll very likely still find some use for USB C cables - but that also raises an annoyance that the cables you already have can't be used with your new iphone.
The power delivery that USB C provides also means it's now being used as a power connector port of devices like laptops. This is great, I'm able to use the same charger for my laptop as I do with my tablet and phone. Imagine needing 2/3 different cables to do that.
