I'm going to Ireland for the week next week, does anyone have any tips for the cheapest way to use data?

I'm on Three, who offer a £5 unlimited pass, but this would still be £25 for 5 days, which isn't too bad I guess... but thought there might be a better way?

A quick Google would suggest most of these European SIM cards are more than £25 for any decent amount, so maybe £5 a day is the way to go?

Never found anything better than the Three Euro Pass.

If you were venturing out of Europe then I'd say get a local SIM, but within Europe I see little point.

I'm going on holiday for a week shortly and i looked at the giffgaff data charges and its 69p/mb. So everytime I load up Facebook and post a picture to rub it in its going to cost about £3.

So £5 per day on three isn't that bad really.

Yeah go for the pass, just for info it stops at midnight UK time so be carefull if you only have the odd day :)

Vodafone Eurotraveller. £3 a day, use your tarrif abroad, and data usage appears to be unlimited during that time too. (I used 3gb over mya llowance and didn't get charged at all)

Yup, I've done this before and it was excellent. Obviously it requires being on Vodafone though!

Thanks for the info.

Out of interest, how are Three going to alter my phone so I can't tether? I understand they might ask me not too, which is different.

EU ruling kicks in on Monday, slashing roaming charges. The 69p mentioned above is dropped to 45p.

They just monitor for traffic that isn't mobile based, you will probably find it works tethered at first but some time later you'll get the "looks like you're tethering!!!" message when trying to load a website. You'd need to reboot the phone in order to reset it as well because on my N2 even websites on the phone displayed the message thereafter.

You won't necessarily need to reboot the phone, give airplane mode a try, deregistering and reregistering the phone from the network usually does the job.
Once they've caught you out, they'll get you again pretty much immediately. They 'got me' once and I'm on The One Plan (go figure), was about to get irate at someone down a phone but fortunately it didn't come back after a brief airplane mode session!

Nope, IMO the extra monthly cost of Voda means it's not really better than 3's Euro Pass since 3 tariffs are much cheaper.

T-mobile do £10 for 50Mb which I think is much better than the 3 Euro Pass for small amounts of data.

Using maps and translation tools, as well as Facebook and email, I just about used 50Mb in a 3/4 day trip to Barcelona. It would have cost £15-£20 with Three.
