EV general discussion

Congrats on the EV6 purchase.

I've only experienced a tethered charger (well, 3 pin permanently mounted inside the garage with the type 2 lead hung on the outside wall :p ) but I think I'd find an untethered charger a massive PITA. Aesthetics aside they just seem to add more faff for no gain.

Then again I charge every day, sometimes twice if I'm heading out again in the evening.
I agree... unfortunately I went untethered , and even though I only charge 2/3 times a week, I do wish I'd gone tethered now... Live and learn

Message them and they will see if they can swap it to mobile service and you can select a date and time like you did at the service centre.

Availability may well be worse or the job may not be able to be done via mobile but I’m sure they will soon tell you if that’s the case.
Mobile technician coming out tomorrow morning..hopefully it will be a driveway fix !

Just secured a 2023 Kia EV6 over the weekend. In the lovely blue colour.

Surprised that I've gone for an electric, but just seems to make sense for our use case.

Any thoughts / things to look for in the ownership?

(Also got a Ohme untethered charger installation booked in)
tidy car my neighbours have one.
as others have said already..... unless you really only charge it a few times a month i would strongly consider seeing if you can get a tethered charge point installed instead of untethered... unless the unit is going in a garage or something so you can leave your charge cable plugged into it 24/7

Just got the battery health check back on the used 2023 Cupra Born V3 77kWh and it showing at 99%.

Sometimes being in a country with relatively poor public rapid charging stations has its advantages :D

I’ve committed to buy and will pick it up next week, the day before the I-Pace lease goes back.

So I have had the X Power a few days now. Here are my current pros and cons:

Pros:

-Obvious one being incredible power and fantastically smooth delivery of it. No wobbles or torque steer or scrabbling around (unless the road is very bad/uneven). It just launches without any drama, and puts a massive grin on your face doing it.
-No rattles or squeaks from the interior so far which is good. This may change with more miles on it, but so far everything seems reasonably put together. Yes, there is some noticeable cost cutting inside obviously, but its not a terrible place to sit/be considering the price.
-Subjective i know, but i think it looks great
-Infotainment system so far seems to have been pretty good. Not the most responsive screen in the world, but Ive experienced worse quite honestly.
-Assignable shortcut buttons on the steering wheel are great, but i just wish a few more options could be added. Having the climate control on there is great though, as it stops the fiddly-ness of using the screen when you just want to turn the temp up or down. Having the 360 camera on the shortcut buttons is good too if you quickly need it.
-Shortcuts on the pull down menu on the screen are good too, but again limited. I WISH there was one to turn the LKA off. There is one to turn the traction control off there, so i cant understand why there isnt one for the LKA or other driver aids (or even other general options). Bit bizarre. However I dont find the LKA too bad at all to be honest; probably as it had the latest software/service bulletin installed on it which made this better.
-Actually quite comfortable suspension wise/not too crashy (although this is going in the cons too for the opposite reason....)
-Quite fun to drive in the bends. Certainly more fun than other electric cars ive driven, and has the advantage of not being a tall SUV as well (but it isnt up to the levels of driving prowess that a Focus ST/Type R/I30N would give you etc)

Cons:

- Wireless charging pad doesnt seem to work all that well (could be my phone, but it works with wireless charging elsewhere ok), and your phone just flies off it anyway as the car is so powerful. Poor design all round, and should have been put elsewhere.
- Seats could be better. They arent uncomfortable or bad as such. However, i think the X power could have done with more supportive/sporty ones, other than just having the stitching colour changed on them..
- MG really missed a trick with the suspension i think. I do agree with a lot of the reviews that say it is still too soft, in spite of them stiffening it up over the standard version. I really think MG should have lowered it a bit more and fitted stiffer suspension. I mean an adaptive system would be ideal, but i guess this would have pushed the cost of the car up a lot more. Oddly it feels like they still tried to make it not too crashy/comfortable, but i would have thought buyers of the car wouldn’t have minded it stiffer.
- Brakes could do with more feel. You can change the feel/force of the brakes, and in sport mode they aren’t too bad, but do feel a bit too spongy in normal and eco modes. However, this is a general criticism of all the electric cars ive tried, which i guess is down to the regen brake systems etc.

Still havent played with the app, scheduled charging and a few other bits yet so will see how i get on with those.

Can you not lock the cable to the charger like the car does when you lock it ?

some can but not all. Perhaps all modern ones can as it seems an obvious feature.

my mates charge master cant for instance but i think a zappi can.
I have an old untethered chargemaster - it's got the cable permanently locked to it, in fact no idea where the key is tbh

I'd just go tethered next time but back in 2018 nobody had a clue haha

I bought a cheap cable mount off Amazon that allows you to feed the cable through the mount, which is then secured with security screws. Now my PodPoint charger is “tethered”.

If anyone wants the cable they could get it if they smash the cable mount to bits, but it does act as a deterrent so it’s not just an unplug and go theft.

If someone stole the cable it’s probably for the copper and they’d just cut it off like they do with rapid chargers.

Someone could just go door to door with a set of loppers and do the entire street in minutes.

Someone was going around at Christmas time cutting everyone’s outside lights for the ‘lols’ in my area last year. They were never caught as far as I am aware despite their face being captured on potato CCTV.

To be honest, I’m not even sure how you could realistically expect to defend against that kind of attack as a private individual. CCTV only really catches ‘the world’s dumbest criminals’ these days.

I think you’d need ‘trip wire’ based alarm systems with flood lights and mega siren that will inevitably goes off every time the neighbourhood cat roamed your driveway.

What spec/motor did you go for? I like the EV6, and may well think about getting an AWD one to replace our Sportage as the family car in the future. Although the Elroq VRS might be available used for good prices by then so might be a tricky choice.
I went for the standard RWD version. The AWD is quite rare and adds a fair amount weight.

Congrats on the EV6 purchase.

Thanks!
I will be charging around once a week so can put up with the cable at that frequency. The aesthetics are quite high on the list for me.

Sorry a follow up question.

Is there any apps or websites that are the best to use for EV Charging networks for when we do some travel across the UK?
For planning/searching for chargepoints

Zap Map
A Better Route Planner

For charging

Octopus Electroverse
And for you - Kia Charge might be handy?

Depending on where you are, Arnold Clark have their own competitively-priced charging network which might be useful though most of their sites are in Scotland. Their chargers are at their dealerships, they appear on ZapMap but you need the AC app to book and pay.

Google maps is quite good too - it’s what my Polestar uses as the satnav and fully integrates all the car information like battery charge and range into the route planning.

I do find it amusing when it calculates a journey and estimates I will arrive with -10% battery though - I don’t think that’s how they work…
