EV general discussion

CPS is a shadow of what it used to be after then farmed the chargers back to the local councils to look after. Its the only network I'd 100% recommend an RFID for as well, as half of them end up not having a signal to phone home and start charges via the app etc. Was great in 2019/20, £20 bought you an RFID card and you got free electricity for 95% of the rapids, now I wouldn't trust them to even work, Scotland went backwards unfortunately.

As for your 3-pin dilemma, do you need to totally fill the battery - what range do you get on say 10%? Also it is quite amazing just how quickly you realise the car sits around doing SFA for 99% of it's life.

I'll get a CPS RFID, I'm having a little moan as it's something I wasn't aware I needed.

You're right about the granny charger, it saves loads of money and the car is just sat there after all. It's getting the mindset away from "oh noes, I only have xx amount of range".

Took out a new Tesla Model 3 at a local self service test site. Very impressed with it. After the initial confusion and unlearning everything I know about antiquated vehicle instrumentation I gelled quite well with it.

I think I’m probably going to end up with a 2023 Performance and try and not think about what I’m missing apart from the obvious smarter looks of the newer shape.

Have motorbikes for fun and always feel a bit aggrieved commuting in a M135i and not getting any enjoyment from it. May as well commute for free with my solar…shame.

The performance really isn’t worth it over the long range dual motor especially on the pre-2024 refresh (the refreshed performance has adaptive dampers, the 2023 and previous doesn’t).

You are giving up 1” of alloy wheel which just makes the ride worse and it’s not the best to begin with and 1 second off the 0-60 you can’t really use on the open road. The performance wheels look nice but they are made of cheese. You only have to look at a curb or a pothole and you’ll take chunks off the rim.

The 2024 refresh has a far better suspension setup, you’ll immediately notice the difference driving an older model.

As a new EV driver all I can say is that the public charging situation is an utter disgrace and needs some seriously major coherent work to be remotely acceptable. It shouldn't be difficult but as an EV beginner I can't help but feel it's implementation is half-arsed at best, even in 2025; as if it's a token gesture and the powers-that-be are either waiting for something better to come along or hope it goes away. Or that it's some not-so-secret cabal and if you don't have the knowledge or a Tesla then good ******* luck to you.

So many charger location map apps have missing or incorrect tariff data so you install a few of them. They then report the wrong price, condition or occupancy status. Then when you get to a charger it's been tucked away as if to hide it's existence and you then have to install this app or that one, buy this tag or that one, spread your data wide and far and finally cross your fingers that the charger is actually working. Wait twice the charge time if someone else shares your charger because yet again, it's been designed and implemented poorly.

It's only been 2 days and 500 miles with an EV .
In the UK charger above 7kW has to take contactless payment so I’m not sure exactly what apps you’re being forced to download tbh (except Tesla somehow seem to have gotten away with it not sure how they managed that)

I’m currently in France and barely anywhere has a card payment option but there’s a lot more interoperability and eMSP roaming so one card does work with most chargers here

Electroverse has been good for me so far but failed yesterday as the best place for me to stop was Lancaster services which has Gridserve chargers which my electroverse card didn't work with.

Also new MG IM5 looks nice - 750 bhp!!

It’s not really a failure, it’s simply that octopus doesn’t have a roaming agreement with Gridserve.

IIRC, you can use a couple of fleet management fuel cards on them like Allstar on Gridserve but that’s it. Tesla is similar, in that regard.

mr musk's new charger venture - attractive architecture.

Genius. Catching a random 30 minutes of whatever film is playing is just what my lunch time experience has been missing all these years.

Also, at least we now know that Elon used to watch the Jetsons as a kid.

However that extra acceleration is nice. Plus they seem to hold their value better.

Continuing to have issues with the ID.7 and no end in sight.

Starting to consider alternative options if I can get to a reasonable resolution.

IX3 at the top of the list at the moment.

Writing off every VW product for obvious reasons, and actively trying to avoid anything VAG if possible.

Biggest concern with the IX3 is range, as I find the range on the ID.7 very useful due to long trips and multiple days away from home.

Prefer not to charge out and about if possible due to costs, time and issues I’ve had with public charging.

The i4 ticks all the boxes but it’s REALLY ugly and refuse to have anything that ugly on the drive, nor be seen in one.

Won’t go near a Tesla.

Polestar appeals but Chinese owned doesn’t fill me with much confidence.

Not considered the South Korean brands?

I think the Hyundai would be the only one but not overly keen on the looks.

EV6 looks great from the front but terrible from the rear in my opinion

Merc EQS/EQE has to be in with a shout. I quite like the Renault offerings right now.

Had a Merc EQE as a courtesy car wasn’t a fan of the infotainment, but driving dynamics were quite nice.

A heads up regarding the Hyundai and if there is another way around this. I hope someone can tell me! My wife has the Kona electric 2024 model and its a very good car apart from this:

Every time you get in if you don't want the driver awareness bing and bong going off you have to go into the setup menu and turn it off every time. This may not be an issue for some but its a few presses and menus and annoys me. With the speed warning its an easy long press on the volume button on steering wheel.

The Kona electric has decent performance and efficiency. Lots of tech and more hard plastics than I would like. But overall its a decent car.
