EV general discussion

Anyone tried the new Renault 4 and 5? Which did you like best. Renault are doing a 0% Apr PCP which is very tempting.

I haven't tried either but having seen them in the flesh - the 5 looks way nicer than the pictures actually a tidy looking car, the 4 in my opinion looks ugly.

EDIT: obviously the 4 is supposed to be a throwback look but I don't think it translated over anything like as well as the 5.

Renault are maybe the nastiest car company out there. Yes, they advertise 0% APR PCP all over their web site. But they don't mention that 0% applies only to 2 year contracts with a minimum deposit of 8000 quid - for the cheapest Renault 5. If you want the mid trim Techno and the big battery, the min deposit for 0% is close to 10000. So for 98% of the buyers the ARP is very high - 6.4%. On top of that they give the green color Renault 5 for free - color that almost no one will want - for any other color it is 650 quid minimum extra. On top of that the factory in France that makes them has a big backlog, so one has to wait around 3 months to actually get the car, if ordered now.

A friend of mine bought a black Techno Renault 5 with 52 kWh battery, that was used as test drive car by the local showroom - so he got it right away. It's a really nice car, I like the denim interior. The 150HP motor is punchy, the car is quite light for an EV - a little bit over 1600kg if I remember correctly.

whilst some of that is not great....... i would say its partly subjective (i like the green!, and as a free colour, at least it isnt white!) the backlog i expect is just they are overwhelmed.

the finance stuff, it is not the 1st time a company tries to pull you in with headline features which end up only an edge case and may end up costing you more.

maybe Renault ARE the nastiest company out there.... but imo none of the above is indicative of that. I would say peugeot hard selling my uncle a diesel despite him telling the sales people he would do a max 5 miles in any one journey and usually under 2 miles, so a diesel was a terrible choice is far more underhand, or VW faking their emissions tests , or ford under inflating firestone tyres leading to them over heating and blowing out or toyota faking airbag safety tests are all examples of nasty actions of car companies tbh.

He's busy being austin powers to park the thing so the charger lead reaches

Blame the Mrs, she drives it 99% of the time and that's how she wants it in the drive.
Personally I'd just reverse up to the gates however if you leave enough room to get things in and out of the boot which is virtually every time she comes in then the cable doesn't reach so it means pee'ing about.
Don't worry about it Simon, you have no clue so pointless debating it.

I saw the photo of it parked sideways in the drive to make the lead reach. That was my clue

Cue ‘I wasnt being serious’ get out. Isn’t this the banter you requested

8m leads definitely useful

Yes you are 100% correct but if we park it the other way to get access to the boot then the cable doesn't reach.
It's a 5m tethered lead and I'm not paying for an 8m to be fitted or an extension.
It's not your house and not your problem.
Use your brain for a little bit.

it was a joke about not being bothered to charge it due to Austin powers movement. Lighten up.

I chose a 8m when mine installed as I used a tape measure to see 5m wasn’t long enough. Use your brain a little bit :)

It’s odd that you could have made charging the car so much easier with buying a cable long enough yet get upset your wife can’t be bothered to charge it. When it looks a right faff to get the car in position. Can you share that photo again please ?

That's the beauty of the MG4 size and 360 cameras, it is zero faff, goes straight in with one reverse.
Also take into account that one daughter lives with us at the moment since before we had the car and she has to get hers into the drive.
She'll park beyond the gates and when we know she's not going to move her car we drive forward to charge it.
During Stoke matches we also let two cars park in the drive so parking in front of our window is perfect.
Would you like a video of my wife reversing in without any faff?
Also the car drives straight out of the drive to the right and because of the turning arc we don't have to faff about there either with the neighbours car opposite.
it really is unbelievable you are debating this when you don't know our situation and why we park in front of the window when we're not charging.

This might upset you but it's a 66 year old woman reversing a car faultlessly :)

The 66 year old pensioner driving straight out -

tbh i would be knocking that wall down, it would get on my ...s too much esp when you have visitors and 2 cars on the drive.

You have a point but amazingly never even thought about it, should have done it before we had a new wall built but to be honest we've always had small cars and not a problem :)
At one time we used to have 4 cars in the drive, ours, two daughters and one boyfriend so we have always parked ours in front of the window for at least 20 years.

whether they would let you have a dropped kerb if you did remove the wall.

100+ r5 etech already on autotrader ; aftermarket ?GB flag on the roof https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202507154501822
I'd go pea green, a sentimental twingo colour (when are they out), but french one with the 5's tessellated on roof is nice.

e: twingos out Nov6 : ds4 electric another r5/4 competitor interesting : rear passenger space because batteries are stacked /ice platform

The wall is not coming down :)

Bloody hell the Mrs could close her eyes reversing that tiny thing in front of the window :)

That suits me. I was looking at putting 14k down (maximum they allow) then it's £30 a month for 24 months then another £13k at the end to keep it. So for me it's like pay 50% now then pay %50 in 2 years. I do intend to keep the car for a good while though.

That's nice. Not sure about the union jack roof though, would be scared of some lefty thinking I am racist and vandalise it.
