EV general discussion

I'm home all day (retired early :) ) So need some cheap energy during day (including Gas). Getting Roof Solar plus a small Battery soon as well.

Next Fixed 15m v7
Fixed term ends 10/06/2027
Elec: 19.93 p/kWh - Standing Charge: 45.70 p/day
GAS: 4.96 p/kWh - Standing Charge:34.55 p/day
If you are getting solar and a battery, even a small one, you should prioritise the lowest import rate possible for 5 hours or more and export. This is particularly the case if you have an EV.

This basically means an EV tariff. Charge batteries and EV overnight, export solar during the day.

Currently the best option is EDF of the main suppliers I think.

Aaaand I’ve been kicked off Intelligent Octopus Go because of the faulty charger. Electricity costs have increased 30%. I had renewed my tariff over Aug and evidently they have somehow been unable to contact my charger at the time and just well…kicked me off without saying.

I only noticed because a huge bill came. Sooo annoyed now. I’ve emailed them asking to put me back on asap. Christ, I’ve been charging the car during the day at peak cost even through they have “intelligently” been scheduling the charging time.

you're on a fixed contract and this price was after the 3.5p reduction in Feb though. no supplier is offering off-peak rates that low nowadays.

Yeah I fixed not long before the orange man started his shenanigans. 6 months left of this price before the good times end.

I did the same too : my off peak rate is 3.99p until 11th April :)
With my solar & battery storage I will only touch the standard rate a few times in Winter.

Hi just curious what size battery did you go for with your solar?
It's 10 kWh.
In Winter we use about 15 to 18 kWh per day, so only on full cloudy days do we need to use the Grid at full cost. When I got it in 2022, a 5 kWh battery was £2.5k, so it didn't make sense to go for anymore for the little use it would get.

OK thanks. I've gone for a 5.76kWh Battery, I could only get 7 panels on my roof so have 3360kW.

I'm home during the day so will use most of whats generated in Summer. Also have Air Con soon so should use a lot of the power generated on a sunny day.

That’s something I really want to our house next, a battery.

Decided to spend some money on getting the house AC first but the battery is certainly next on the list of home improvements

On the point of solar, is there anything other than orientation (E/W for main house roof, with some S facing on side roof) i should think about? Just moved house and need to get the roof replaced as it's still the original 1930's roof without membranes etc for the majority of it (house was reduced by vendor after the survey pointed this out). Stronger battons?

I think you can get solar panels installed now instead of roof tiles if you need to replace roof.

Check out the solar thread in home & garden section.

You should save costs if replacing the roof by foregoing the tiles and just have integrated panels on every aspect possible.

what they said. if i was getting a new roof now, i'd definitely get integrated solar panels and as much of the roof space as possible
this saves on the costs of the extra tiles and looks better than rail-mounted panels, and more importantly, the roof loading having to support both the tiles, panels and also wind-loads
the trade-off is that panel efficiency is slightly worse than rail-mounted panels

Are they redirecting monies into next evolution of car platform - it has become a two trick pony Y/3 whilst the chinese do their rapid churn thing;
& Khan doesn't seem to be celebrating tesla taxis on the roads either.
