EV general discussion

Anyone getting insurance refusals for EVs? Friend was told by his insurance company that they would not renew his insurance and had to find an alternative. No changes from previous year. No issues for me but I am running a PHEV.

Renewed mine with Tescos, little over £100 cheaper than last year. I did get an email about my old car insurance up (bmw 328 gt) which was over half the price off this like.
Not sure what type of figures everyone else is paying but mines down to 500. Was just under 700 last year and around 900 the first year. I've been driving getting on 20 years with 12 years no claims.

The 3p per mile doesn't really worry me too much (for now anyway!) Maybe more so in the years post 2028 as it ramps up.

I am still new to EV ownership and am still in that feeling guilty stage where I am putting in 0.55ppm expenses claims when the cost to me is either 0 or negligible where I have to use super chargers on longer journeys... (we enjoy free charging for the most part courtesy of the wife's employer!)
I can see why it's not an issue for you ... but some of us paid fully for our cars and don't get to rinse an employer to make a profit on running expenses.. ;)

i read horror stories about this a few years back. (around the.same time range rovers were like catnip to thieves so having an EV and a JLR one at that I was worried.... but so far (touch wood) it's been fine.... even after my wife was in a (no fault) accident with over £150,000 of vehicle damages which wrote off 2 cars and an ambulance as well as damaging 2 others

I was a little surprised to see my insurer had what I'm buying as a selectable car since it's officially not out yet, but they did and it appears to be about £200 less than what it cost for the Alpina, but we'll see nearer the time when I can actually put it through once the delivery date's confirmed.

I still have the £600pm car payment :) just the expenses help to soften that blow somewhat. I was previously running a Formentor 2.0 VZ3 which was costing me a small fortune so its nice to be able to enjoy the lower costs for a while!

A colleague in work had his MG4 catch fire!!

When I heard I assumed this one would be national news due to the dangers of EVs etc..

Turns out it was some scallywag trying to torch it (security photo is hilarious).. No surprise it was written off, although the damage was minor, just a bumper actually burnt and a little bit on the boot, he drove it to work for a week before the insurance collected it.. so he's seeing about buying it back, there is zero damage anywhere near anything electrical..

Not in over 5 years of ownership however, when the wife had a brand new ev Darwin couldn't swap the insurance over as they didn't have it on their books yet.
Plenty others on comparison sites would so just switched.

ioniqw 5 they had had the theft problem (was it remove the headlight and plug into bus, not a relay attack)

You mean the USB cable one? It was literally everywhere when it exploded. I believe it's been largely fixed now.

Oh wow. That was unexpected. If you said jaecoo or leap id not be surprised. But Hyundai is a pretty established brand
Probably down to the insurance company, I've had Hastings Direct say they couldn't insure a Audi A4 in the past.

Might not even be anything to do with the car. Underwriter might have just decided they didn't like the sound of them anymore
