EV general discussion

But all the brake discs are corroded from lack of use :(
On my route to work there's a downhill road about 1.5 miles long and quite steep.
When I charge to 100% every so often I get to it at about 97%, so I get to clean the brakes there without going out my way.
My regen doesn't kick in until about 95% so works out well.

Well you cant see them on mine anyway as they have the aero covers. But I get you - I still use the brakes occasionally, enough to not worry about that.

Still getting my head around 'mpg' equivalent figures. I've done 226Wh/mile since new (currently on 360 miles) - which is just under 4.5 miles/kWh. No idea how that rates, but seems to be pretty good.

I look at this two ways in my head...

1. Actual equivalence based on a cost - this is more variable because it depends on specific costs and they vary frequently but at the moment:
4.5 miles per kWh, at 7p per kWh is 1.56p per mile.
To get 1.56p per mile in a petrol car, with £1.80 per litre fuel costs, you'd need to be doing 525mpg.

2. For a general 'is this good efficiency or not?' in a context similar to old petrol cars you can imagine them as broadly equivalent - an EV that does 4.0 miles per kWh is kinda like a petrol car that does 40 miles per gallon - reasonable expected efficiency for the type of vehicle. 2.5 miles per kWh is like petrol doing 25mpg - that's quite thirsty, 5.0 miles per kWh is like 50mpg - good efficiency. Absolutely no real logic or sense to this but for me was a way to help some people contextualise whether an EV was efficient or not. (This falls down with people that can't appreciate it's meant to be more of a metaphor than an actual comparison because they start waffling about diesels doing 60mpg so until an EV does 6 miles per kWh why would they change, for those people this sort of thinking just makes it more confusing :p)

lol!
Well I need to get a new mentality in my head that even if I drove to work everyday (250 miles a week), it would still only cost £5-6 a month to run. And I cycle a fair bit still too.

...and I'm not in a 3.0 I6 anymore where I would try to nurse to work most days.

Only time I worry about efficiency is if it's going to be the difference between public charging or not. Otherwise send it.

Just launched an EV scheme at work through octopus and it’s mighty expensive.

It’s essentially only worth it if you’re trying to reduce your tax to below a specific threshold eg 100k.

Quotes for me were roughly double that of what I’d pay if I just got the car online myself.

Yeah my wifes scheme is awful, mine was much cheaper on the cars that interested us. But it's very rare from the office I'm in that people have used the work scheme. I couldn't get near my price on the Kona with any of the leasing searches at the time of ordering. The price on them has come down a bit right now, so it's only £30 more expensive on the leasing sites than what I got through work and I also get the servicing etc.

Fun feature on the new ID Tiguan (I don't think this is the first time VW have done this but I didn't notice before) - you can set the driver info screen to be an imitation of the old 2000s era VW clusters

Nice, how are you finding it?
Very serene. This is the first EV I've driven for any distance on my own and it was extremely odd. One pedal driving took less than 5 minutes for me to get the hang of it. Car is comfortable with good seats. Suspension is OK but doesn't feel as sophisticated as that which we had on the CX5 which is firm but incredibly controlled.
I do miss CarPlay because I don't like it's nav voice. Need to see whether that can be changed.
The display with all the other cars on it on the right of the screen is very distracting but I guess I'll get used to it. I really miss having the HUD in the CX5, or at least a binnacle. I think I will need to fit one of those screens.

Overall, from my 10 mile drive home, I like it. I think my wife will be very happy too. We've got to cover over 500 miles this weekend so there will be plenty of time to get used to all it's weirdness.

Taking a leaf out of Ford's book. The new S650 Mustangs can have their instruments like a 1980s Foxbody.
