down the line with the EU / UK import duty rules of origin will that disproportionately impact maintenance costs/2nd hand values for apac ev's,
preferring the likes of tesla with soon eu based manufacture.

Not sure about that... Tesla was the only option for ages so people bought them, but 90% of people don't necessarily need the spec that Tesla has in terms of power and range

The thing that Tesla benefits from is an amazing charging network... the competition really needs to improve if they want to stop people buying Teslas

It’s not just about the power and the range, design and quality are also big factors for people. Charging is also bigger than the network and Tesla just tends to do it better then the MEB platform.

In reality the Model Y sits somewhere between the ID.4 and the etron Q4 in terms of how premium it is and the price reflects that.

The Y is priced very similarly to its competitors. Those competitors tend to offer something more traditional in terms of design but can lack in other areas where Tesla excels (infotainment, efficiency, speed, range, charging, simplicity). It all depends on your priorities. Choice is a good thing at the end of the day.

Sure the ID4 starts at £38k but that model just doesn’t cross shop with a Model Y long range. People at that price point may be looking at something like the Kia Nero which is cheaper and has more range but is less premium.

Tesla winning on design and quality are they :p

Hard to take it seriously if this is the argument... Tesla has not got good rep in these areas.

Agreed choice is a good thing, I'd definitely consider one but at £55k it would be a big no from me.
 
I never said Tesla were winning at quality, they are no Merc/Audi/BMW but their designs are definitely what lots of customers actually want.

You mentioned the ID4, the thing everyone heavily criticised on both the ID3 and 4 are their poor quality/cheap interiors. They are also filled with terrible capacitive buttons and the infotainment systems are poor. Don’t forget the ID4 can also cost north of £55k…

Ever driven or even been in one? They have a rep for poor build quality, which was deserved, but that's not reflected in the latest reports. As for interior quality - the trim is fantastic. I don't personally care how squidgy the plastics are, I do care what it feels like to be in the environment, and the Model 3 stills feels fresh and streets ahead of teh competition.

IMO the Tesla just doesn't feel as premium as the likes of the E-Tron or Polestar. Perhaps that's personal preference but that was my experience at least. The cabin experience (for me) felt very basic in the M3 (I guess in a big part this is due to the lack of driver display).

Have you driven and been in the competition ?
 
The cars referenced were the ID.4, Ionic, EV6 and the Enyaq. I think it’s fair to say the Model 3’s interior quality is better than the Enyaq and ID.4 and the Model Y is the same as the Mode 3.

The other two are not out yet so who really knows.
 
Totally agree, sitting in a Model 3 is such a pleasant experience with such a minimal amount of fuss and doesn't feel anything like any other car, other than maybe other Tesla's. I get why lots of people don't like them, as having something so empty compared to a hundred plastic buttons, knobs and switches, and being sandwiched in due to the layout and design of the car means it feels quite foreign.
 
On my second electric car. Had a new Leaf for a couple of years fun but not enough range, On longish trips I'd get to where I wanted to be but not back again without a charge.

Got a good deal on a new Jag last summer. Absolutely love it, range is plenty, fantastic drive, sleek inside and out (much better than any flavour of Tesla I looked at), **** infotainment but it turns out I don't need to play Cyberpunk in my car.

Best thing about EV's is I haven't been in a petrol station for 3 years! Turns out for most trips my range is effectively infinite because it charges overnight while I sleep.

But those buttons are usable on the move, without having to look at them. A touchscreen is the least ergonomic thing ever. Also it's putting everyone in one place which can fail (like some already have on earlier cars) and then nothing will work.

It’s ok. His house is a piece of wood with a tv mounted 2m above the floor
