EV general discussion

Shame BMW discontinued the i3! Hopefully there will be a funky, small & quick EV coming out of the new Visions or whatever they're called..

Dust mite allergy makes it really annoying to pick a car now. Historically it would mean picking leather / fake leather seats instead of fabric. Now there's weird/innovative/new/recycled materials with god-knows-what dust mite properties, and companies trying to avoid leather and leather-look.

Ive got a choice of chargers as below, any advice appreciated. I have solar and I am on Octopus Agile currently. Got a MG on order for my wife, was thinking that the Hypervolt would be best?

Phone signal isnt so hot where I am so wifi would be better, otherwise I would have gone with the Ohme

I don't know about the smartpro.

I did look into the hypervolt. it's a good looking piece of kit and when it works properly it works well

however it is fully reliant on their servers for most functionality and in a tear down video I watched the sparky doing it said the build quality was not great.

I ended up going for the zappi 2.1 which isn't on your list. it's not the prettiest but it's tried and tested, mostly bullet proof (albeit some have issues with it in very hot weather if on a south facing wall)

it has the best solar support of all of them however and apparently works well even if the back end servers go down (you can control from the device ittself of needed)

right now zappi isn't supported by intelligent octopus (only the Ohme I think it is is) but support is coming any time now. (fingers crossed... it has been coming soon for 6 months but I think it is going into public beta any day now)

on another topic EV related . I did my 1st charge using ionity on my electroverse card over the weekend. got 41kwh in 32 minutes which for my car is very good....

and best of all.... I got my invoice through and it was free. no idea why!.

Yeh, one of the issues with a lot of ‘smart’ chargers is they rely on 3rd party servers which could be turned off at any time and have no local control. Anderson owners nearly found this out the hard way… fortunately most turn into dumb chargers if they lose their connection to the mothership, better than nothing but ultimately still e-waste.

I expect they’ll be some consolidation in the market over time, we’re currently still in the gold rush period. Support will be dropped at some point for all the smart features one way or another… it’s not sustainable to keep them going forever without ongoing revenue.

I’ve got a hypervolt, I plug the car in, it charges the car…

Avoid the big companies as they tend to still follow the OLEV rules for chargers which they are paying grants towards. The grants for home owners ended long ago.

Any competent electrician can install one and there is nothing in the electrical regulations that require you to have off street parking.

The OLEV rules were mainly about stopping people getting grants (tax payers money) to install them in inappropriate places.
Hmm, I'll have a look into it.

I'm surprised how cheap the Tesla M3 Long Range is on SS. £500 a month net.....and enough range to dissuade my charger concerns. If there was a Supercharger at Donington services that would be ideal, but the nearest is in the middle of Derby which is a pain. Assuming I can charge a Tesla off a BP Pulse, with an adapter?

In terms of commute....

£500 a month for Tesla
£?? leccy
vs
£200 a month for train
£50 a month parking at station
£80 a month various costs (insurance, MOT, tyres)
£100 a month petrol

Plus benefits of new, no hassle car, and Greta points.

Can just about make those man maths work.....with only 220 miles of absolutely necessary driving a week, I don't need to charge that often with a T3 LR.

No adaptor required, yeah you would definitely get 220+ from a new LR. Much easier EV charging and Nav too.

Supercharger network is generally cheaper too.

I can get 220 out of my standard range so it should be no problem for the long range.

Have you seen the Long Range RWD model on your list? Its 385 miles WLTP range compared to 374 of the long range dual motor. It sits half way between the standard range and long range price wise.

id2 Vs Renault 5 Vs e2008 Vs Corsa e Vs MG3 (or what ever it is called)

soon there will be lots of smallish EVs perfect for many single folk as well as a good 2nd family car.
Looking forward to see what the Renault 5 is like and the VW ID2all.

Shame Honda aren't replacing the e too.

How far are manufacturer ranges off real world usage? Teslas are all on a six month wait.....I can get a Polestar 2 LR (301 miles quoted) more or less immediately for the same money.

obviously weather and driving style related but my ipace best case (with my driving) is about 270 miles ... so around 30 miles off advertised. I am happy with that

that said I have never been below 10% battery so it could be more or could be a little less

BMW i4, anyone got one and got any thoughts / comments?

For company car and they seem to offer great value for lease, lower cost for a 50k car than most other 40k elecs…..

My limit would only get me (just!) the base sport e35 version, but then I can add some options myself to a limit, I just can’t use my own top up towards th base car price - daft company rule that makes no sense.

Family of 4, kids 5&8 and a large labradoodle who I’m hoping will still fit in passenger footwell per current car (l200)

So, anyone got one? Space? Range? Performance? Tech etc?

There is an Enyaa 60 going spare very soon as someone leaving, but I’m sure its much lower range (I believe), slower charging and performance etc would give me regrets?

In all honesty, I would say you could lose up to 1/3 in the rankest of winter weather that we see for 2-3 days a year. Mines rated for 306 miles, I’ve never got less than 200 out of it. Normally 220-250.

That said if you do a lot of short journeys then it will eat the range faster with the start up cost of constantly heating and cooling the cabin and stop start traffic uses more range than free flowing driving.

I’m surprised Tesla’s are a 6 month wait, you can buy an inventory car from them and drive it away tomorrow. They are literally given them away on 0% PCP to clear stock for the new model at the moment. I guess that will be the new model in 6 months...

Those polestars will be the same, old stock being cleared out for the new model due at the end of the year. The new one has way more range than the current one and the single motor variants are moving from front wheel drive to rear wheel drive - it’s a big update.

Look at the lease companies 'specials' or 'offers'. Generally means it'll be a car that's in stock, and will be on offer cheaper than if you ordered it specifically.
