EV general discussion

It'd be hidden away in the back corner of one of the car bays anyway, it looks nice to me in black anyway :) Thanks for linking to it. Basic is good, I do not need more "smart" items in my life! Cant you specify everything via the Tesla app anyway? My neighbour was showing me the app connected to his Model S a while ago and i thought that this included charging options....

Yeah, Tesla allows for scheduled charge times (only accessible from inside the car) and % stop limit (accessible via both car and app). No scheduled end time yet but that may be in the works. This paid-for app turns any dumb charger into a smater one anyway: https://ev.energy/solutions/for-ev-owners/

Yeah I think the smart aspect is for the variable nature of electric prices and tariffs. Allows the wall box to control the charging that way if someone preferred that.

The Omni cable can be used to manage that anyway if you decide an alternative charging schedule method but have a dumb wall box.

Photos of the QUBEV on my very uneven wall... still need to repair some of the scratch marks but, yeah, pretty neat and discreet overall.

Been using 3 pin on my Tesla, 9 mph is enough for me. Small risk of burning down the house though...

If you're using the supplied adaptor and aren't using a multi plug extension lead or daisy-chained socket system that's extremely unlikely. Honestly - don't stress about that. :)

I did use a multiplug once, but was impressed that the car alerted me via the app that the plug was getting warm.

Due to have scaffolding around our house and I couldn't park on the drive, I recently spent 3 months charging on a 3-pin on a 10M extension lead, with the EVSE in a dry box. Absolutely fine and no issues at all.

That does 200 miles?!

Not even sure you'd get one for £15k let alone £5k, does an old Zoe do 200?
By high miles I was thinking 100k+. Not seen many with that many miles for sale but they do pop up very rarely and I didn't think about the fact a 100k used battery wont have the full range like it was new.

£5k might get you in a beat up 2012 Leaf. It'll do maybe 50 miles on a good day :p For 200 miles range, the cheapest is likely to be a 2020 Zoe for about £20k.

There aren't many "cheap" EV models that can do 200 miles.

In the used market you are looking at cars which came out 2-3 years ago, which means last gen Leaf, Zoe, Ionic, Soul and that's about it. None of those will do 200 miles on a charge. Oh and Tesla Model S/X if you want to drop a wedge of cash but it will do 200 easy.

A 2020 Zoe is barely a 200 mile range car, certainly not in winter, its also brand new and not available 'used'.

For consistent 200 miles range your only real options are Kona, Nero, Soul, and Model 3 all in the £333-£38k bracket and essentially brand new and not available second hand. The new Zoe, 208, Corsa etc. all fall short but the Zoe has the longest range out of the bunch.

I've likely missed a few but those are the main cars.

How much did it cost to get it fitted?

£330 inc VAT. Probably could have got a big cheaper, but I think a chunk of that was materials with needing a fuse board, and I'd used him before commercially and was paid for by my business.

Regarding some of the Qs above on regs, it was for: "Supply and fit a mini fuse board with tails and blocks, type A RCD and 40A MCB. Supply and fit 6mm armoured cable to car point at the front of the house. Supply and fit a TT earth rod in a conduit for mechanical protection."
