EV general discussion

Had a bit of a moment and just ordered a R5 110kW Iconic Five Comfort Range 52 kWh in Green.

Cupra ends in Sep and prices went silly on Zenith.

but i hate EVs

Is this through a leasing company? Pop Green isn't available on the Iconic Five trim so they may have the wrong options set for it.

I think you are right, I did notice that so expecting them to tell me I cant have it - Zenith. The yellow was about £21 a month more. P11D 29.3k so helps the BIK.

I dont like the black, not sure on blue - maybe need to see in flesh and definitely not white as my BMW is white.
Techno is in green, but no heated seats/wheel and dont like the wheels. I guess the interior is nicer in iconic and would go with yellow.

On another note my Born ends 6th Sept. they emailed to say they will be taking VED from pay in Sept (for 6 days) and I will be charged £195 + VAT which makes no sense. Dont know why they dont just register them all this month for 12months.

Looks like E.ON now have a (trial) smart EV tariff scheme too. Octopus have really done well to shift the market. It’s pricier than ours though since we locked in before the cap rise, so not sure it’s even worth the free £120.

That's mad that, can you challenge it?

Sigh, called insurance (AXA) today to swap from Volvo EX30 to Audi Q4 E-Tron

Them: "Can't insure it, because it's a full EV"
Me: "What.. you mean like my current car?"

A bit annoying as it now means I need to cancel the policy and I'll have not earnt a full years extra NCD as a result.

But it still does highlight the point of when the excitement of EVs was up and coming, you'd think that small cars would be the 'ideal' fit. But manufacturers are pumping out 3 ton EV monstrosities instead (or what it would seem by what EVs are on the road).

Many reasons for that. One is technical - the battery needs to go into the bottom of the car, so to have same amount of vertical space as an ICE car an EV has to be taller - hence it's easier to design and build EV SUVs. Another is customers in rich markets like UK prefer SUVs. In China they have a huge range of small electric city cars, but here most people can afford an SUV - especially given the easy access to credit.

I personally hate the SUVs. They are a killing machine in a collision with pedestrians (hit their body higher and way more likely to damage vital organs), cyclists and regular cars. They consume more fuel/electricity as they are heavier and have poorer aerodynamics. Take more space on the narrow UK roads and parking spaces. Can't believe all the stupid excuses people in this thread make for them. But a bunch of selfish morons started an arms race on the roads and now it's not safe to drive a regular car anymore.

Plonkers. It annoys me when they do crap like that

Had a very weird situation yesterday in the Merc. Driving through Haslemere town at mid 20s. Suddenly, "beep beep you're going to murder a child", *stops*. Full emergency brake with no warning other than the beep a split second before.

It took me by surprise because, you know, I was looking at the (empty) road.

Thankfully, no car behind me as they'd have almost definitely gone into the back of me. I was so stunned by it

It's a very nice car otherwise :P

It has reinforced how good the ID.7 is, though. The VW has:

  • Better headlights (adaptive + projectors vs reflector on Merc)
  • Better seats (more comfortable + fully electric with memory vs manual distance on Merc)
  • Better infotainment/displays (the Merc has a lot of wasted space and doesn't have a HUD as standard)
  • Better driving position
  • Nicer steering wheel and, I never thought I'd say it, better controls on the steering wheel. Seriously, the Merc makes the ID.7 controls look really good. You actually can't use them.

While I felt the EQE was a better package, I've changed my mind. There are a few questionable choices on the Merc and I don't think it's worth a premium.

Nevertheless, it's still very weird closing the door on the Merc. The outside sound just disappears.

If anyone has any questions, give me a shout :-)

Still no idea when the ID.7 will be fixed.

Another re-inforement of why I would never buy a modern car (EV or not). I'll wait until they start designing them properly, and but features in that people want. (and hopefully ditch a load of the safety EU crap too)

You'll never be buying anything other than classic cars then because the new safety tech isn't going anywhere. Every new safety tech has always been fought but has eventually just become accepted.

See the resistance towards the introduction of seatbelts that everybody now just accepts and uses.

I wouldnt say my 2019 1 series is a classic, and doesn't have a load of modern safety crap in it. Or a stupid iPad in the middle with no buttons.

I'm neither disabled or a wimp.....so you won't ever see me on one of those! :p (unless I end up in the first category!)

I am registered disabled and converted two bikes back in 2011.
Parking at the hospital is an absolute nightmare so being able to use a motorised cycle and park outside my office is wonderful while everybody else comes in moaning about trying to park half a mile away.
People ride motorised motor bikes, mopeds, cars, catch buses and taxis to work so I fail to see what the problem is with a motorised cycle.

My seatbelt has never misjudged whether I've been involved in a crash and fired the pre-tensioner. Likewise my airbag has never accidentally gone off.

My collision alert however went off three times on Tuesday alone with the "BEEP BEEP BEEP" TAKE CONTROL NOW warning scaring the **** out of me because the car wet itself at the sight of a shadow on the road. It didn't actually brake thankfully, a car slamming the anchors on unnecessarily would not impress me in the slightest.

In short I get the resistance to the technology as it isn't 100% reliable, nor is it even close, and that really isn't acceptable.

For people that need them, nothing. I guess people wonder why obesity is going up and up, when we add another motor to another form of transport.

I realise I have quite strong opinions on E-bikes, but that's just me. I cry inside every time I go in a bike shop and you have to search for the 'normal' bikes, as everything on display is an e-bike :(

It also wouldn’t score 5 stars in a modern crash safety test.

How often do you really press the button on the dash in your car when driving? I’d hazard a guess, you don’t.

Pretty much everything is via a central touch screen in my car, I seldom use it when in motion. Pretty much everything is set and forget in a modern car.
