My cheap PCP Honda E:ny1 is going back in March. I doubt I will ever find another deal that cheap again (£179 with 1 month deposit). Unfortunately my company doesn't offer EV salary sacrifice so decided to plan ahead and take the next good deal I could find and put an order in for the Citroen eC5 Max long range. 8k miles per year, 1 month deposit and £300 a month, which I am happy with. Due for delivery in May/June.
Just means I'll have to daily my C63 until it arrives!

Generally loads of good PCH deals in December, might want to re-look then usually lot s of in stock deals as well. What prerequisites have you got?

Renault will look to cut the prices of the 4, 5 and new Twingo by up to 15%, rather than create new models, if the European Union’s proposed new E-Car category is brought in next month with certain parameters included.

The EU’s proposal is centred around creating a new class of small affordable electric cars – similar to the framework in place for Japan’s kei cars – that are built in Europe for Europe. It claims this would boost EV sales, cement jobs and give the continent’s car makers a weapon against the wave of new state-subsidised Chinese-built EVs that are undercutting legacy brands.

Renault Group boss François Provost told journalists on Thursday that, as part of the new category’s framework, he wants law makers to pause the need to integrate new safety measures for between 10 and 15 years. “If so,” he said, “we can dedicate our engineers to improve [current] cars and decrease the cost, [meaning a] lower price for the customer.”
 
That may have contributed unfortunately, regular sockets just aren't built for the extra load and heat that a proper EV rated socket is. I'll certainly keep a close eye on mine though next time I'm using it at my parents house, the reason I got it was because the blurb I read said the plug temperature was monitored.
Are the EV rated 3 pin sockets really that different to a standard BS 1363-2 socket?

I know the testing is different with the repeated (28?) cycles of the 8 hour continuous load test versus a single continuous load test on a non EV marked one. How much of a difference that makes 10 years of use and abuse later I don't know.

That said, if you are putting in a single there is no reason not to get an EV rated unit.

Few cars are made for the UK market. They're side switched versions of cars for the EU market.

The article is about EU reducing cost of cars ins a new eCar class for the EU (not Europe but the European Union) this would be for cars sold in the EU. Not sure UK can really replicate it.

I got a Hyundia Kona 73 plate, bought for 39k on PCP and still owe 22k, car is only valued @ 14k so value has put me in -8k equity, all my other petrol cars, I've always been 5k +equity, so for me EV cars are over priced at new and not worth it.
So after I've run down the contract, I will hand car back in and go back to petrol.

That seems a very credible way to throw money down the toilet.

Some or all of those numbers sound very very wrong.

Regardless, it’s not you that’s in negative equity - it’s the dealership. That’s the point of PCP, so you know minimum value at the end and they take the risk. You knew what this value would be when you signed the contract, so the current market value doesn’t matter in the slightest.
 
Not sure the Kona was ever a £39k car outside of Covid shortages.

You can buy a bad new one for under £30k (long range) or lease one for under £300/month on a 3+36 and 8k miles.

Also a used one on an 73 plate seems to retail for about £18k, £14k on a WBAC trade in seems reasonable but a terrible way to dispose of a good car.

Not sure what going back to petrol achieves other than similar cash outlay for the car and higher running costs.

There's loads now, especially the PS4 but I just want something that's big inside with a big boot and comfortable. Also I wanted something with no deposit for £300 a month or less and it ticked all the boxes. It's got a huge battery too which is a bonus.

Sounds like you bought it during the EV sky high prices? This was when deals/pre-reg on new were non-existent even used EVs were more expensive than new ones.

Has there not been any QoL features that have benefitted you in that time?

For me, the prospect of charging at home at a very cheap rate in the winter and free in the summer, the quality and ease of driving, servicing costs, pre-conditioning and a few other things go some ways in making me feel better about the staggering depreciation. I wouldn't buy new though as deals can be had on 12-24 month old cars. I may change my tune after a year or so EV ownership. I think the only issue I have is fast charging and cost of it. Seems like subscribing to the supercharging network is the way to go.
 
Took the Smart #5 out today. The Pro and then the Brabus. Both ends of the spectrum so to speak.

The Pro, which is the base entry, was very nice. Seats were lovely and comfy with good adjustment. Great visibility inside. Steering was very direct, no dead spots, it reacted very well to input change and the wheel felt nice to hold. The regen on "medium" I found ideal for the brakes. I hardly used the actual pedal, and talking of brakes they were very responsive. Versus the Skoda Enyaq we test drove a few months ago, those brakes were like sponges, with too much travel before feeling any engagement. I was also surprised at the acceleration from the Pro in "sport". It was no slouch. The car rode uneven bumps well and the cabin noise was minimal. It was a very nice place to be, with no rattles. Used the infotainment only for a few minutes; it would take time to get used to where things are properly but it seemed responsive. The panoramic roof was lovely and we really liked the way the seats move to let you get in and out, before returning to their memory position. Wing mirror adjustment is in the menu system but was very quick to find and both left, and right, dip in reverse (right only slightly). And finally the indicator sound is quite fun and different and has 3 different volume levels for those that want to reduce the volume. :)

On to the Brabus. No words can describe how fast this thing is in "brabus" mode. I mean it verges on painful when fully accelerating. It was scary fast (and I used to have a supercharged Mustang GT), but this thing is in a different league with that instant delivery of power. People have said that it is too much for the car to handle, or the chassis to handle, but the car was absolutely fine even on a cold 8 degrees today. Bit of squirm, but it stays planted. We both said that actually it is too much power. But of course you can drive more sedated but then why spend £52k to drive in "comfort" mode. Interior was lovely, all suede / Alcantara with red stitching. Some carbon fibre bits. Seats were firm. Even with the adjustment and lumbar I found the side bolsters to be a bit lacking, and no adjustment / inflation option. OK if you are a fatty lol but other people may find you do slide slightly from left to right. Getting back in the M240 I noticed straight away. I do like to be slightly "pinched" (sure there is a joke there somewhere). But, not a deal breaker, and certainly not the worst seats where some appear to have zero side bolster support and you slide around just by taking a small corner lol. The larger wheels didn't seem to impact ride quality or noise.

I think for us, the Pulse would be the model to look at. You're getting nearly all the performance of a Brabus, but the softer interior and still with the tech. Dual OLED screens, the Heat Pump, All Wheel Drive, etc. Still haven't figured out how to open the boot from outside. :)

They drove very well and using the wand for gear selection took me back to my AMG A35 days. Lack of start/stop button was weird but you'd soon get used to just jumping in, flicking down to "D" and away you go. Range at about 95% charge was reporting (I can't remember exactly), I think ~310 miles on the Brabus and the Pro was ~280 miles.

Really couldn't fault either of the cars at all, Pro or Brabus. The dealership were great, let us take them both out for as long as we wanted, no pressure or hassle.
Test drive booked for next week. It was very nice and in the colour we both prefer.

Just to follow up on this. We did settle on the Pulse model in the end, and not the insane Brabus, although the Pulse is still rapid (only ~1s slower). There is an order in now. 3-4 months is the expected wait. The M240 has gone. I'm really looking forward to it. @Simon worked out the boot as well. :p
 
Hmm, something has gone screwy with my Octopus account/app.

My car isn’t on the app anymore and when I add a device it just gives me the option for Heat Pump…

Tariff hasn’t changed or anything.

Seems byd seal has many pre-reg big reduction cars as below video suggest £33K for a car with luxury rrp £45K tag,
hadn't realised the 3.8 badge on the back is 0-60.
can't they reduce RRP retrospectively, if they realised they over-priced it, and evidently have oversupply on imported stock, like I've seen layed up in Oz too.


suppose you can negotiate the price of the luxury car tax off of the sticker.
 
Ordered the wife a Renault 5 Iconic Comfort on Thursday. Works lease, £260 a month for 6,000 miles in Midnight Blue. We both enjoyed the test drive of the techno we had, was originally going for the Techno, but it was only £15 a month dearer to get the Iconic.
 
Speaking of smaller cars, BYD seem to have let some of the Dolphin Surf go at a cheaper cost, PCH on a 1+23, 1+35 or 1+47 is £190 pcm.

Not bad for £2.2k per year, not as good as the Puma-E deal but doubt we'll see anything like that again for a while.
