And you get double taxed on fuel, you pay fuel duty and then VAT on the amount of fuel and fuel duty.
They could just ramp up tax on electricity to the sort of rates we see on fuel duty but I suspect that would be drastically less popular

EV's are getting hit with triple tax (Road tax - Tax on electric - Tax per mile)

This is basically bringing ICE and EV pretty much inline
ICE - VED, Fuel Duty, VAT on Fuel/Duty
EV - VED, PPM, VAT on Electric

It's still massively cheaper to run if you can charge it at home (it was already as or more expensive if you couldn't) and they're getting a slightly higher threshold before they incur the expensive car supplement tax.
(edit - and the fact the 3p per mile charge is about half the 6p per mile you pay in fuel duty on an 'average' efficiency car)

We'll just put £3 in an EV 'Road Tax' box every week, it will still be way cheaper than any petrol car we've ever had and of course cheap electric on iGo.

"Under the plans, motorists will submit details of miles driven each year at the time their VED is due. A validation check will be then made against the mileage recorded at MOT garages.
For vehicles under 3 years old, the government intends for these cars to attend an additional mileage check at an accredited provider – MOT garages. This would be around their first and second anniversary, but the government is also seeking views through the consultation to confirm whether these additional checks should be required.
These checks would be funded by the government to cover the time taken by testers to carry them out."
Well fuel duty is only frozen until September next year so EV may still then be the cheaper of the expensive choices.

In a Nigel Farage/Brexit kind of way, that is going to be another chancellor/Prime Minister’s problem I suspect.
Can put whatever you want in the budget to make yourself look good if you don’t think you’ll still be in that position when it comes time to implement it!
Seeing as the 3ppm EV tax doesn't come in until 2028 "after a period of consultation" I believe it won't see the light of the day.
They'll soon realise that it'll cost more to govern, be open to avoidance, go against GDPR and will impede their money spinning plan of net zero.
At which point they'll work out EV VED on some other arbitrary element (weight, battery size, inside leg measurement of the owner etc).
