EV general discussion

The 5p cut is from 2022 is only frozen until Sept 2026, then it'll start increasing
missed that detail but it’s nothing like the 3p overnight addition to EV really is it. It’s not increasing yet when EV comes in.

So not sure how ICE is suddenly going to be unaffordable like a lot of people keep hinting at. 5p a litre is 0.6p a mile

So not only do we have this new tax on top of paying more VED than a huge amount of ICE powered cars on the road, those of us who charge at home and are on EV tariffs typically pay a lot more for daytime rates. I am on Octopus IG and my daytime rate is a whopping 32.17p per kWh so yet another penalty for going "green" and buying a EV.
I'm struggling to see how an energy tariff you choose to go on to save yourself money is a 'penalty'.

This means mileage driven overseas by UK registered cars will fall into scope of eVED, as with fuel duty, which does not vary on basis of where a car is driven

What? Of course it varies if the car is driven overseas! Unless you've got a mega fuel tank you're not going to be driving overseas and not filling up.

I wonder what the rules of double taxation are on this, as you will be paying tax(vat?) if charging in another country.

I am also confused, since every kWh you load shift saves you ~20p - there is a COP of 1:4 (I am using this term completely incorrectly, but fits the explanation) - use 1kWh at 7.5p saves the equivalent of 4kWh in the extra you'd pay due to IOG peak penalty.

My screen wash is always bloody frozen and no engine to defrost it. Having to use it neat which costs a lot more. Lol
You need better quality screenwash, we used to have that problem at work on the trucks, as the screenwash is often somewhere that isn't really warmed by the engine. Changed brands/grade and never had the problem since.

Not sure if its the Super Concentrate or the extreme without looking, and I'm not currently at work, we buy a 205 ltr barrel about once a year, and have an auto mixing dispenser.

I just use the cheap concentrate from Tesco or B&M et al and never had a problem.

I just read the instructions and mix it to the correct concentration, usually 50/50 for winter.

I use whatever Aldi stick in their winter pre mix and can't remember ever having an issue.

Currently still got a tank full of summer stuff and it's not given me any problems the last week or 2 down to minus 3/4

3p a mile will soon add up specially for those who do a lot of miles a week.
Government now know there's a lot more electric vehicles on the road.. losing out on money so they've had to do something about it sooner or later.

and yet as a household doing approx. 36k miles we'll still save over £3k a year compared to running petrol cars. I'd imagine we're right in the top end of yearly milage.

It's the lower milage people I think that it's going to impact more as they're not making the big fuel cost savings to offset it.

Last year I did around 8500 miles roughly, £1300 in diesel, this year in my EV, similar mileage I'm going to be around £350 to £400, large chunk of that cost was for public charging on holiday. Adding another £250 I'm still way under what I paid for diesel. It will be the people who have no choice but to public charge which will be hit the worse, as it will push their fuel costs above an ICE car.

We're low mileage and never charged on a public charger in 14 months.
Before EV we were paying £120 a month for electric and around £60 to £80 a month for petrol.
Because of Octopus iGo we're now paying around £80 to £90 a month for everything.
People don't take into account the massive savings you can make in the home when you have an EV.
Like I said above, I have my doubts but if and when the pay per mile happens we'll just lob £3 a week to the side meaning our electricity and fuel bill is now somewhere between £92 to £102 a month.

Governments need your money I afraid. This was always no brainer as losing fuel duty had to be recouped in a reasonably equitable way. Double taxation has always been a thing.

EV Goldilocks era is closing. Not sure why so many people held back during the golden times of EV ownership.
