Exactly. The transition to BEV was always inevitable, both parties have been straight about that even if the dates did change. Common sense tells you that the government aren't going to let the motorist cash cows get away so it was always going to be the case that BEV will end up as expensive as ICE. It has to, otherwise there are billions of pounds worth of black hole in the countries finances.EV Goldilocks era is closing. Not sure why so many people held back during the golden times of EV ownership.
it is those who paid a large premium for an EV over an ice due to the "promise" of really cheap running costs who I think will lose out most. with the miles I do the reality is I was never going to pull that back anyway but now... it's pretty much impossible.Last year I did around 8500 miles roughly, £1300 in diesel, this year in my EV, similar mileage I'm going to be around £350 to £400, large chunk of that cost was for public charging on holiday. Adding another £250 I'm still way under what I paid for diesel. It will be the people who have no choice but to public charge which will be hit the worse, as it will push their fuel costs above an ICE car.
Rabbit in the headlights, springs to mind.

Waffle waffle waffle simple as possible waffle waffle pay to maintain the roads waffle waffle.
Politicians have zero knowledge about the details on any of the subjects they talk about.
45p mileage limit? I presume this is to do with work company car and claiming running costs back? if it is bad for you think about what it is like for the rest of us who have to pay the going rate for fuel and purchase price of the vehicle.Looking forward to see how this is going to work. If having to charge away from home it's more than petrol already. I'd be less bothered yb this if they increased the 45p mileage limit.
this may be true and I am even ok with it. I don't expect every politician to be an expert in everything they have to talk about, that is why they have people working for them.Politicians have zero knowledge about the details on any of the subjects they talk about.
They are employed because they are good at reading scripts, good at talking around on the spot questions and good with public relations.
Same as the news readers asking the questions - they turn up in the morning, get given a script of questions to ask on 'x' topics and present it to the camera well.
It's all a show and moment it's goes off script, they need both need a team of people behind them suppling them with the answers/questions.
IMO News programs like this are a complete waste of time, for anything of value. It's entertainment, keeps people in jobs and is a method to supply adverts to the people watching

If you believe Labour, that the country's finances were in an absolute worse state than they were aware of when making those manifesto promises (and I do, personally) then I can cut them a bit of slack.it's the same as when quizzed on broken manifesto promises.
I would take a bit of honesty over weasel words. "yes I know it is not ideal and I made those pledges in good faith however global events and a drop in productivity has meant that the numbers didn't add up.
Our public services and infrastructure are in as bad way and need increased investment and so I have made the tough decisions to do what is best for the country for the long term and that means we all need to pay a bit more, and I have tired to do it fairly and impact those who have less the least.".
45p is for personal cars only. Salary sacrifice and company car EV are 7-12p a mile.45p mileage limit? back to topic. EV drivers were always gonna have to pay at some point but why is it EV drivers are getting hit retrospectively. ICE vehicles huge tax changes have always been on vehicles purchased from a fixed date going forward, EVs don't get that luxury.
That mileage allowance is to cover additional wear and tare, maintenance, insurance for business use, fuel and the provision of a suitable car for the job at hand (or depreciation if you want it simplified).45p mileage limit?
