EV general discussion

I did the postcode checker for their tariffs and found a third EV orientated tariff called Intelligent Octopus Go - EV Saver which has a overnight rate of 6p per kWh, still six hours 23.30-05.30. The day rate is 29.78p per kWh for me, the same as IOG variable. I will give them a call in the morning and see if I can switch to it.
you can't
this tariff is only for users that got an EV through octopus directly

edit: beaten

I think that tariff is for customers who have purchased / leased their EV from Octopus

Edit - far far too slow

‘regular go’ will be more expensive full stop. 1 less hour off peak and off peak is 1.5p more so if you have a compatible charger or car, there is no advantage to regular go*

*unless your EV charger has been installed in a way in which your home battery sees its demand and fills it.

Weird when I signed up earlier in the year for our location the unit/standing charge rate was lower than what it was offering on intelligent go.

I’m on 30.83p unit rate, 49.61p SC but you are correct, both octopus go and intelligent go is the same day/sc cost now, so indeed, don’t go the non intelligent if you have a compatible setup.

Lowest growth figure for a couple years sounds bad to start with but growing 3.6% still when the total market was 1.6% down year on year is still pretty positive really. PHEVs look like the real winners this month.

this is a problem I have and it's a pita. I need to sort out home assistant. I spoke to a sparky (I have no clue tbh ) but he said it would be difficult changing mine so the car didn't spaff my house battery so home assistant is my only option.

i thought this would be to do with the henley blocks and location of the CT clamps...i'm sure a semi-competent sparky that normally does EV installs can sort it out in an hour or so

I can't remember what he told me exactlybut iirc it was something to do with absolutely zero space where my electricity box iswith the wires crammed in almost touching the back of my fitted kitchen double oven unit.
I think he also said something about my hybrid inverter making it harder.
(don't hold me to that however I may be talking sh...e)

space is a valid excuse, but having a hybrid inverter definitely isn't
most of us have hybrid inverters

I may ask someone else and see what they would charge if they said they could switch it. silly really if it's doable the installer should have set it up from the get go. I can't imagine a scenario where anyone would want to charge their car off a home battery.

Just a thought if you go to mainland Europe in your EV are you still going to pay 3p a mile ?

See Brexit was just a figment of your imagination after all !

yes, the gov already thought of that. they said that the proportion of drivers affected will be small, so they will not bother with adjusting mileage accumulated outside of the UK

Why are people apparently thinking currently fuel duty goes towards roads? After all it is just replacing that and milage completed is a simple measure to calculate.

I still pay council tax on my house for that month when I go on holiday for 4 weeks. I'm stamping my feet in anger...

What's it going on roads got to do with the question?

Currently if you go and road trip around Europe you don't buy your fuel in Europe and then have to pay more duty on it when you get back so it seems reasonable for people to question if you're paying for charging in Europe and doing your miles there why should you have to pay duty on it when you get back.

In fairness, a part of the justification of new VED was that EV drivers need to pay towards roads. The chancelor said:

I will reform our motoring taxes…

…exempting search and rescue vehicles from Vehicle Excise Duty as called for by my HFs the members for the Western Isles and for Whitehaven and Workington.

And because all cars contribute to wear and tear on our roads…

…I will ensure that drivers are taxed according to how much they drive and not just by the type of car they own by introducing Electric Vehicle Excise Duty on electric cars.

This will be payable each year alongside Vehicle Excise Duty at 3p per mile for electric cars and 1.5p for plug-in hybrids…

…helping us to double road maintenance funding in England over the course of this Parliament.

The above is taken from the speach published on gov.uk, I didnt add the dots. https://www.gov.uk/government/speeches/budget-2025-speech

So if you set of with 900 miles range in your diesel that you already paid duty on and go to Europe, use said diesel, and don't fill up there do you ask for a refund on the duty you paid?

Am I the only one that sees a slight flaw in Octopus’ plans for limiting car charging to 6 hours?

Say you get home empty ish and you need a decent charge for the next day. If you plug in at 6-7pm, set a ready time of 4am and request 100%, the car will start charging immediately.

Before you go to bed you could unplug the car, disconnect smart charging by flipping the toggle in the app, set a schedule in the car to 2330-0530, plug it back in and hey presto you’ve probably got a good 10 hours of car charging.
