EV general discussion

My wife ran the 24kwh leaf out three times. Multiple times it got so low it just showed a picture of a turtle and no range. She’s not managed to run out in the 40 yet but has got pretty close.

Pretty criminal that a 4 year old car with just over 100k is beyond economical repair. What a waste of resources.

It's true but that's classic main dealer antics, they're not mechanics in the real sense, they just swap out whole units, they don't actually ever fix anything.

If you take your 4 year old Audi in with a knocking sound from the engine they'll just quote you £lol to replace the whole engine instead of fixing the actual issue so it's a disappointment but not a surprise they're doing the same for EV batteries.

cla ice vs ev rear footwell compare, another nail in a electric saloon future.

@jpaul ask yourself the following question:

‘When was the last time I sat in the back of my own car (or any car) for any material length of time’?

If the answer can be measured sensibly in minutes, the reality is it doesn’t matter.

Other cars with better rear legroom are also available, including in saloon form factor.

Maybe if everyone ignores him he will stop posting nonsense in this thread, he has no intention of getting a EV anywaay.

My gen 2 Leaf has loads of rear legroom. I am 6'2" and the Leaf is the first car I have owned that I can get in the back behind my drivers seat and have my knees nowhere near the back of the front seat plus loads of headroom too. It's also very comfy back there with their own independantly heated seats.

That's a compromised platform though. Any chassis and body built for both ICE and EV is going to have less efficient space usage.
My tesla Y has bags and bags of rear footwell space.

Go in the model 3 and you won’t say that.

The idea a Bev specific platform somehow doesn’t have batteries under the floor continues to baffle me.

Only few cars go to the expense and complexity to do that and means you need cells elsewhere anyway.

Calling it compromised just kills any credibility of an argument. Most use flat square batteries now to keep material cost down.

I do wonder whether anyone here stating these things have actually sat in one. If I was to read the reviews of my old M235i GC, and my current i4, issues with rear space is stated about both of them and with special comments about the size, or height of the rear doors making it tighter to get in and out of, plus the coupe style restricting height in the rear.
Guess what, I never purchase a car thinking about rear passengers and never will. My son in law is over 6' and if he doesn’t like it in the back he can walk. I bet there aren't many owners, if any, who drive these cars with adults in the back all the time anyway.
So really footwell space is insignificant to the sum of the whole car and what is more important is how it drives, how it performs and how it looks.

it is fantastic to leave home with a full 'tank' every morning and never have to worry about having to stop off when you're tired and its miserable weather.

This has been the game changer for me.
There is one petrol station on the way to and back from work, and it's always packed and usually has several pumps out of order, and has no pay at pump service, so despite queuing for fuel I have queue with the great unwashed to pay for said fuel.
Not once has it enhanced my work day, ever.
Without wishing to preach to the choir, it's so much easier to plug in at home and let the energy company top me up whilst I'm catching a few zzz's.
That said, if we push back the ban of ICE to 2040, then it's no bad thing.

On the down side, I now can’t just grab some snacks whilst paying for fuel and pretend it doesn’t really cost anything as the fuel is so expensive anyway.

If I go into a petrol station now, it’s for snacks only and I have to beat myself afterwards for wasting money AND calories.

I really liked the idea of the CLA, but it does feel somewhat cramped which isn't ideal for people like us with a lanky teenager that likes to be chauffeured around, annoyingly he would walk if we told him to, but then he was accosted by some hooded youths and since then isn't as confident on his own, understandably.
I'm looking forward to the new C-Class next year or '27 - it will still be a saloon but hope it might just offer that little bit extra space the CLA doesn't, also the CLA lacks the Premium Plus in the UK presently and missing things like a heated steering wheel it just daft in such a car. I put looks second to last as I care more about the inside than the outside, everyone has different priorities though.

Yeah to be fair one of the reasons I try to fill up after work when I finish late/early hours as there are 2x 24 hours fuel stations on my way home - it can be a miserable experience during the day at anything close to peak hours.

I don’t think this update on Octopus got posted:

TLDW: Octopus will work with Omhe to fix the throttling issues before the changes go live and they will check any other integrations which also have that behaviour and work with the manufacturer to fix them if needed.

Otherwise the changes are going ahead at the end of Jan as planned.

New car arrived on Tuesday. Renault Scenic Alpine Esprit 87kWh coming from a 4 year old diesel Octavia vrs estate I am enjoying the quietness. Quite an unusual experience going to my first electric vehicle, you can hear relays and general outside noise! Just getting to terms with it all. It's like a smartphone packed with technology - overall I am impressed only annoyance is the silly drive and media stalk. Oh and why do Renault insist on the card key design.

I am now an EV convert :D

I wonder why the charger manufacturers have apparently taken it upon themselves to decide to implement throttling then, surely they only know what Octopus are telling them in terms of what is available in terms of load.

The statement made at 4:03 was quite telling, I'd be amazed if it wasn't implemented from the Octopus side.

It makes sense to have a more granular level of control where you can... so they did. Nobody cared until now so they are going to row back on it.

Being in a software dev role it sounds like "devs did it because that's how it needed to be done to give us the results the bosses wanted and no one cared/was interested in the hows until someone that didn't know about it signed off on these changes and now we look a bit silly".

I've definitely been there, it's why we trained one of my old managers out of even hinting at agreeing to anything in meetings until he'd passed it by us

They look really cool, I was considering them until I got a good deal on the eC4. Did you get the matte paint?
