EV general discussion

I’ve had an awakening, I realised if I knew what most of the EV users had before their EV I wouldn’t have even considered talking cars with them.

Oh please tell me more about your Vectra LSi diesel rep
mobile…

That said atleast cars exist, could be arguing about who has the best imaginary friend - sorry religion.

I see we've gone off down another rabbit hole of why some tiny percentage of the population probably couldn't run a BEV.
The usage case preaching does get tiresome especially when people have zero experience. And of course the people making out V2H chargers are viable, conmon and cheap.

Journey ignored me because I call him out on his massive bias

There’s discussion and there’s bickering like small children.
Whatever’s said gets picked apart then you get dragged into the bickering which then escalates. What’s that meme about idiots internet and experience

Nothing worse than EV owners with vegan mindsets

What I never understand is people who slate other cars and rant about certain OEMs on forums. Seems such a waste of effort. Especially when rarely based on experience

Plenty of V2H offerings now, lots of bi-directional chargers becoming available with both AC and DC coupling types. Enphase, Sigenergy, Quasar to name a few. Lots of cars now with it being turned on/enabled or coming as standard

Quite ironically the person who started the debate didn't put their thinking cap on an realise how much a benefit a BEV can be to some peoples living arrangements, where having a giant battery on their property might actually be a blessing not a curse.
How are they charging said battery /car? If they off grid. If they needed a battery and solar they would have it already and not wait for a car

Why don’t you have one yet then ?

The whole point of the original comment was there is no or very limited electrical supply in these circumstances and they can live a long way from existing public charging offerings (10x further than the average distance for the UK as a whole). Sure that might change in the future, and if it did V2H or V2L would be very useful, but the approach so far doesn't inspire confidence in that.

no car can power a house in the uk yet. Why do you talk like it’s common?

Not true.

I’ve been powering my house from our Nissan leaf for the past year using a bidirectional charger. You’re correct that it’s not common though.

Saves us about £80 a month as we charge overnight and then it gives back to the house during the day. A battery pack on wheels. Great tech, but it’s a trial unit, once it dies it’s an expensive paperweight.

Nice, is the 6h limit on Octopus going to impact you after Jan?

That's a false narrative. People wanting to discuss the pros and cons of AC vs DC public chargers or remote living with an EV is absolutely on topic. If it's tedious no one's forced to be here. You can also use the ignore button.

Some posters have posted some awful drivel at times on this thread. Give someone else a go.

Was a lot of positive after recent storms. I'm surprised people living rurally with frequent supply issues don't have a back up generator.

Quite a few people do around here, it's always on my 'need to sort one' list which never seems to get done :( so every time we have a power cut i'm cursing that i didn't sort something out.

For my next EV one with some form of V2L will be high on my priority list, i don't need to run the whole house, a single extension lead from the car strung through the cat flap will do for the power cuts to keep the freezer and a few essentials going and would be a lot less faff than having to keep a generator fuelled and maintained year round for the couple of times its needed.

Some do - we have some backup generation, solar and batteries here though only fairly small scale. (As above I keep meaning to put something more substantial in place but never get around to it and then cursing when it does happen).
