EV general discussion

Had a “I told ya so” moment with a colleague at work. She recently had a £12k budget for a used car and I showed her some ID.3 and MG4s with 250/200 ish Sumer/winter range. She could not get over her insecurity about EVs despite me telling her it will save over £1200 per year. She buys a new to her used car every 7 or 8 years when it becomes a literal money sink for repairs. I pointed out that £1200 times 8 equals almost new used car next time.

Ultimately she felt her bi monthly round trip of 160 miles would be too much for an EV to handle. Despite me telling her it zero issues even in winter. She can even top overnight up using a granny charger at low speed at her destination to get another ~50 miles of range.

Yesterday we were doing a 150 mile round trip for work and took my wife’s 64kWh battery iX2 for the trip. She had bought a used Renault Captur and felt we should take it in case we ran out of charge. We left with 83% and got back with 25% and 60 miles of range left at an overall efficiency of 4 mi/kWh mostly motorway. This was at 17c, so not ideal EV conditions either.

I just said that most even mid battery sized EVs can do 150 miles without breaking a sweat. I will drive home 20 miles without a single worry and get up in the morning with a full battery.

I have to say the iX2 is such a mixed bag for reviews, but it is efficient for its size and very comfortable and great to drive. Even its looks are growing on me.

It's sad that Social Media never stops with the myths imprinting these thoughts on people, we have one above @vectisitch :)

This has all come about because the Govt wants everybody to go that route so rightfully people will fight it and talk b******s about them.
Before the Govt announcement anybody with an ICE didn't give a stuff about EVs including myself - drive your milk float, I don't care.
Now I'm a proud milk float owner and the best car I have ever owned since 1975.
 
Seriously though I've always been a non conformist. Im told by government I should buy an over priced electric vehicle that could quite possibly go up in flames or be worthless in 7 years because the batteries need replacing at too high a cost. Then said car has to be scrapped. How is that good for the greenies? Meanwhile could tries around d tge world are burning huge amounts of coal or firing missiles and dropping bombs all over the place. No thanks. I'll continue to drive my combustion engined car and save my money on the huge purchase cost of the electric car. Oh and I also ride my smoke churning 2 stroke engined 1985 classic motorbike.

I'd be very cautious to be honest as if that is an open admission to trolling you'll end up with a forum ban, not sure if you care or not, or are just posting rubbish to keep MM access. Heads up anyhow before the mods come along.

Of course im not trolling. Im opening debate on why we all feel we should do as we are told by government ministers who probably own expensive classic gas guzzling cars??

I have had other EV owners say they get confused about how to convert efficiency to actual range. I always tell them to take their 100% range and divide by 100, that gives them how many miles they will get for every 1% of the battery.

So if they get 2.5 miles per percent, then 50% gets them 125 miles. 10% gets them 25 etc.

Sadly for you the mods can see the edits you've made and when you made them, so you already dug your grave mate. If you were open to debate you wouldn't have posted the first single line of Mission accomplished i see" you were openly trolling and now have tried to protect yourself.
 
Having recently come from seat Leon FR 67 plate, the biggest difference I’m experiencing is how relaxing driving is. No gear changes, instant power, quiet cabin and best of all no petrol stations! It’s not even financial thing for me as I only do 5-6k miles a year, I just don’t like them for some reason.

What a load of ill informed drivel. No minister forced me to buy an EV and if you haven’t got one then clearly you are contradicting your own narrative.

I bought my first one to save money on 40% tax, BIK and fuel costs. Been using EVs ever since.

Who on here owns their EV, I.e. isn’t leasing or PCPing it?


I’m looking forward to owning one but also feel nervous about taking on the associated risks of doing so.


But my 435i has taught me that you can end up with huge costs with any car.

I wasnt attacking by calling them milk floats. I call them all milk floats because I grew up seeing milkfloats. Why do you all assume your being attacked? Your all far too intelligent for me so I'll bow out of this conversation. Im the one getting attacked here

statistically ICE cars burst into flames far more than EV’s and if your battery’s gone after 7 years you’re going to get a new one free of charge.

I’ve bought all of mine (finance or personal loan till owned outright) as I hate the idea of throwing money away. I owned an Insignia that I bought brand new for 9 years, paid off after 4 when I bought a house and 5 years of no car payments felt like bliss! Trying to pay off my EQE as quickly as possible now.

Everyone’s situation is different though and lease/pcp can have benefits, especially SS schemes or those where every other cost is included.

My current thinking is that I’m not hugely keen on the designs currently coming out (from Mercedes at least) so going to stick with the EQE for a reasonable amount of time
