EV general discussion

It won’t be 3p a mile for long it will go up rapidly until it evens out the cost of an EV to a Petrol car or as a lot of experts are predicting far exceeds it.

Well no, it was always going to rise, once the tax take from fuel duty begins to drop significantly the money needs to come from somewhere.

It'll only exceed the fuel duty on ice vehicles if that were to remain at it's current rate, that's not going to happen.

To no one's surprise, I returned the i5. The biggest issue was the car was clearly owned by a smoker, and despite it being run through their "fumigation" the smell returned. Add in some strange loose trim rolling around behind the air vent and the rear seats squeaking due to not being properly attached, I had them take it back. We also both agreed that the BMW seats just aren't working for us, the lower part of the lumbar which cannot be deflated causes us both aches.

So we used this as an opportunity to scale back the budget (we weren't that happy with the amount the iX and i5 cost) and get something that is more familiar.

We knew we wanted Audi, as our B9 A4 Avant was very comfortable. We tried a lot of different options from them:

Q8 e-tron - not convinced by this as an EV. Pushed the budget up £6-7k for what we would want anyway.
Q4 e-tron - my wife liked it, but the integrated headrest into the backrest caused her immediate discomfort.

We took a model 3 on an extended test drive as they are very reasonable on lease, but ultimately the seats didn't do it for us and the lack of CarPlay would annoy both of us.

So while not full EV, we decided to take a step back and go for a hybrid for the next 4-5 years. Picked up an Audi Q5 55 TFSIe Competition, with that lovely b9.5 interior. It's in fantastic condition, 22,000 miles. For our driving, 90% will be done on the battery.
Be gone from this thread you heathen :D

Seriously though, that's an unfortunate series of events. Dare I ask how much your brief adventure(s) into BMW-land cost in the end...?

It’s best we don’t talk about the cost :(

I’ll be back full EV one day when Audi produce a class leading EV.

Shirley at this point it'd make more sense to commission some proper seats for the both of you and have them installed in whatever car you fancy.

You two must have some seriously odd shaped buttocks.

They were talking more about when you charge not at home with some charging 80-90p kWh then add your 3p a mile or whatever it is at that point. It’s going to get quite expensive.

TBH for me I much prefer the way EV works and drives so if it ends up costing the same as Petrol so be it. I’m just going to enjoy my £7 charges whilst they last. lol

If you charged from a wall socket, how would they know whether it was EV charging or house use ? ( I understand how a dedicated EV charger would work it, but not a wall socket )

With no doubt the 3p mile tax thing will increase ... I just know that they'll push us towards a new tech, then turn their backs start charging us for it. Can see it coming.

Ultimately though, I'll be moving to a EV in the next year or so. For me, it will be the way forward.

This part of it would be more likely to mess up EV sales, than the actual cost of it per mile. But any other method of reporting miles is open to abuse. Currently the only time the Govt gets anything mileage related from you is from the MOT, so that rules out new cars unless they introduce something that a testing station has to do for them too.
The proposal was newer cars go to an MOT station for a mileage check only until such time as they need an MOT.

I don't care about the new cars..... or even cars bought after the announcement.... it is the going backwards to older cars which bugs me.

now adays a new EV is close to parity as an ICE however many (even the majority) of people who bought an EV in the past paid a massive premium over an ICE and face high depreciation due to the huge improvements in EV tech over the last few years (hopefully that will settle now as the tech settles)....... part of the man maths made to justify this was the lack of tax on the vehicle meaning over a 10 year ownership the difference would be minimal.
and yet at the same time stinky old "ECO" diesels pay naff all tax still.
imo they should freeze fuel duty at the level it is now..... but introduce pay per mile for every brand new car sold from the next budget regardless of fuel type ...... I could even accept going back in time to all EVs sold at any point after the pay per mile was initially announced (because we were forewarned).
this would then still keep a significant incentive for new cars to be EVs... and not hit people with a stick who bought based on previous tax schemes (which would be consistent with how the eco diesel cars never had their tax significantly increased).... and would not overly punish people who can't afford new cars.

and allowing brand new cars not have to pay for 3 years ..... I understand the reasons for this but it does feel to me a bit like rewarding the people who can afford to buy a brand new car whilst kicking those who can't in the nuts.

Wife’s Corsa went for a recall today and our Vauxhall dealer has now also become a BYD dealer. Whilst waiting I had a look at a Sealion 7 in the showroom tbh it was very nice felt solid and seemed well built. Have never really looked at BYD before but I was quite impressed. Not enough to trade my KIA though. lol

Got one coming next month on the lease scheme. Lots of car for the money.

Cool make sure you update us how it is. I only sat in it but it felt nice the seats were super comfy especially compared to my GT seats. Doors had a nice thump when closed it felt well put together. Nice car.

Ugh, ex-smoker cars are the worst. The smell never goes away. My leather wallet still smells of a Golf I owned in 2018.
Also, can confirm the seats in the new 5 are abysmal, especially the ones without the lower lumbar support.

I don't get this really. Why do people do it in the car? I guess people don't care and they can do whatever they want in their car, but it just ruins the car for the next person if they decide to sell it in the future.
