EV general discussion

The main pull for a Tesla is effortless efficiency, cracking software and the slickest interface going.. grok is even proving useful, how it still sets the benchmark in so many ways is pretty damning of most manufacturers disjoint software, with few notable exceptions..

A man after my own heart.

I didn’t need a £37400 Model 3. I still have a need for a car, and a £18k Model 3 fills that hole :)
have you tested out the older models? your highland model 3 is a big step up in quality and overall refinement in comparison, you may/may not find an older model palatable

I had a Freemont M3P in 2019 which was a complete bag of **** in terms of build quality. I sold it after less than a year and got all my money back. We’ve had the 2022 MY from new and it’s been mostly fine apart from a faulty headlight, a shock died, control arms had to be replaced and there was some rust on the tailgate (common issue).

The Highland is outrageously refined compared with our MY. You’re right, it’s a very a noticeable step up. But for the budget I have, I can’t have that experience right now. It’s not like the original Shanghai-produced Model 3 is terrible.

yep, i have a 2022 shanghai model 3 can confirm. so long as you're aware of what you're getting then all's dandy :)

Wtf is going on here then? I thought Tesla did this a few years ago

Had a member of my team at work go off on how much it costs him to drive the 80 miles each day to work and he needed to get a new car with better efficiency as his old petrol car is expensive to run. We are office based two days thankfully, so could be worse.

One of his EV owning colleagues suggested an EV because 160 miles is more than doable in a lot of EVs in his price range. I listened with amusement as this EV owning guy refuted every one of the usual BS anti EV myths. What was odd was how the range “needed” kept creeping up. 80 miles there and back became 90 miles, then when told 180 miles is still within even winter range of any decent EV, it became more like 200 miles per day.

Now I fought the urge to tag team with the other EV owner to shoot down the anti EV myths, because I have just become totally disinterested in wasting my time convincing people EVs are viable. But I did call out that the distance seemed to have increased almost 20% in the past few minutes. Despite there being zero earth tremors indicating the expansion in the earths crust.

I think my sarcasm killed the moment as everyone just went back to work. :D

I think there is a bit of a disconnect there between the EV side looking at the pure commute range and the other side considering things often aren't that simple when you have to consider the possibility of things like diversions or additionally running some errands as well as the commute, etc. but not want to get bogged down in the details in a conversation. Also the state of the charging network in this country doesn't help people to get over the unfamiliarity hump when it comes to understanding how to make an EV range work in situations which don't just neatly fit inside the range of the average EV + a decent amount of overhead.

EDIT: On a very vaguely related note they've gone off EV vans again at work after going off and on it again and now off it again and have ordered a bunch of Sprinters so I'm guessing EV vans is off the table for at least another 2-3 years.

Does your EV have cold gas thrusters like the new Tesla Roadster?

I don't know if Europe or rest of the world will allow this thing on the roads as our current road rules were not designed for flying cars but it sure is a cool gimmick, with the thrusters the new Roadster does 0-100kmph in 0.8 seconds flat!

This thing is never getting anywhere outside of it's nicely controlled environment. Lets see them doing the demo in the day for a start because iv got a sneaky suspicion there's a heavy amount of additional assistance for both demos that they are hiding with the lack of light.

Erm, why? Just why? I don't understand. Tesla had the opportunity to make a great roadster that would sell well. Instead they choose to make another one of Elon's fever-dreams.

Tesla now has this warning on its website: The New Tesla Roadster is not approved for public Road Use

So there is your answer, this car is basically made for Tesla fans to take to a drag strip and that's it; 0-100 in 0.5s and 230mph top speed

"Our multi-mode fan and ground sealing system acts as a downforce generator, pulling air out from beneath the vehicle. This provides enough suction to hold the vehicle upside down, even when stationary. Powered fans and active wings maximize traction and cornering speeds in all conditions, achieving massive downforce at zero speed. A next-gen steer-by-wire system offers incredible feedback in various road conditions. Activate Track Mode to lower the car and transform the suspension. High downforce or low drag modes can then be used as needed on the track."

I love it. Hilarious. I watched a recap this AM, and no doubt missed some of the boring stuff, but isn't a lot of this going to be wound back for the production model? I see the performance and the suction stuff, making it to product, but not the flippy boosters :D
