If £3k is all your savings then is blowing it on the finance deposit for a £20k car when it buys you so little over a cheaper one the best way forward?

£6-7k buys a nice Audi A4.

Not all my savings, its around the 8500 mark atm, so if I can find a nice example for 10k I'll start considering it.

For 10k though, I'm going to be looking at 58/59 surely? Ideally I want at least 2011/12.

Probably slightly older than that, even.

I'm sure you do, I want a 2012 5 Series too, but sometimes we can't afford what we want without taking out enormous finance deals and sometimes it just isn't the smart choice :p

Personally if you are going to finance a used car I'd be far more comfortable with a 50% deposit. Reduces the amount borrowed, reduces the interest paid, means its yours quicker and it reduces your risk of spending out a load of money on finance only to walk away from the car at the end. Especially when the car itself isn't really anything special, a 2012 A5 for £20k is going to be what, a 2 litre TDI? Great.... a generic 4 pot diesel, just the thing to take out a whacking great finance package to park on your drive.

Everyone will have their own views on this but.. is a £20k Audi really the only choice? If you want to spend £20k and nobody can convince you otherwise at least make it something reasonably fresh, not the old A4/A5.

Very true :p

This car looks amazing to me, if it had say 30-40k miles for that price, I'd be all over it!

I've had a look at a few different cars, but I always seem to go back to the Audi's.

I've looked at things like jag xf, BMW 1 series, M3, there is so much choice, I don't want to make the wrong decision!

A 140bhp 2 litre diesel A4 in white with an illegally spaced numberplate and black limo tints 'looks amazing'?

Really?!

It must be because I'm young, I wouldn't mind driving round in that :p

You've looked at M3's?

You post a 140bhp 2 litre diesel A4, claim it looks amazing and you'd buy it if it was lower mileage, and then tell us you've looked at M3's?

Not sure if serious.

I've been looking at cars for months now, I've changed my mind so many times its exhausting.

I pick a car, want it for weeks, search and find something else completely different, round in circles.

Well did you want a 400bhp V8 with enormous running costs or a 140bhp 2 litre diesel? It isn't often that people would claim to have looked at both...

This is the thing with easy finance. People find something flash they fancy, realise it's easy to borrow the cash, 'want' it in the same way they 'want' the new Galaxy S5, then 3 weeks later oh look something else, I 'want' that now instead. The mavity of spending quite so much on a car seems lost under those circumstances. It's treated as if it's some sort of latest flash gadget when it's a far, far more important purchase a far bigger commitment.

When I was younger I owned loads of cars that I only kept for a few months because I fancied one at the time then changed my mind.

The reason I could do this was because I just paid cash for them, finance a 20k car even with a 5k deposit and you'll soon find yourself in a sticky place if you want rid of it and or its successor quickly.

Are you really sure this is a good idea? Everything you've written so far suggests you arent ready for the kind of financial commitment you're about to make

I've always wanted an M3, but have never been in a position to run one, and before I wouldn't of afforded insurance.

I now have 5 years no claims, a much better, higher paid job, it could actually be an option!

If you REALLY wanted an M3 you wouldnt give a moments consideration to an Audi A4 2.0 TDI 140 with crappy tints. Sounds like you want to say you own an M3 :p

Well atm I don't have a car, and I figured financing was the best option.

I think with an Audi, it just looks more executive if you know what I mean, they are more posh.

I'm trying not to sound really snobby lol :p

But you have 5k cash, take that and add say a personal loan for the same and buy what the hell you want, if you change your mind...sell it and take something else for the same cash.

A 140 tdi a4 is a great company car, it is not something that you should be considering along side real performance cars like the m3!

Ok to be clear about what I Want from a car:

Minimum of 2ltr engine
Something that really pulls along in any gear when you put your foot down
Looks nice
Tax isn't really an issue
Insurance isn't an issue either
Not something that's gonna throw up massive bills, hence why I wanted newer models
Only in black or white
3 or 5 doors is fine
Good fuel economy, I do 10k+ miles a year

Now where does that leave me :p

A 140 TDI doesn't really move ingear when you put your foot down. It picks up its skirt a little but thinking there's anything other than a little bit of initial turbo urge is naive at best

What's with the 2 litre? Totally depends on the car

Anything can throw up massive bills, you just need to weigh up the risk

3 or 5 door isn't exactly narrowing things.

It leaves you with a choice of many, many cars.

Not looking at m3's and diesel Audi a4's
