Hi folks

Finally joined the ranks after lurking for a few years. System is in the specs below and finally looking for a new graphics card. The rest of the system still flies, not bad for nearly 5 years old :)

Deciding between a AMD 290 and Nvidia 780.

AMD pros:
Price
Performance
Mantle
Potential to flash to 290X depending on manufacturer/PCB
Potential free BF4 and silver code

AMD cons:
Heat
Noise
Power
Reference cooler only
Drivers could be better

Nvidia pros:
Performance (when OC'd)
Better at OCing depending on card/cooler
More features such as Shadowplay and "Experience"
Cooler
Quieter
Customer coolers
Decent free games

Nvidia cons:
Price
Stock clocks mean it doesn't beat 290

Personally I'm swaying towards the EVGA 780 FTW edition with ACX. Saw it at £395 recently. Can't quite justify the extra £30ish for Classified.

If the 290 had a custom cooler on it from launch and the prices were roughly the same as they are now, I think I'd be sold :D Pity...

In my opinion if anyone is spending £400 on a graphics card then a 7990 would be my choice, it out performs both cards comfortably and is a steal at that price.

Do people really still harp on about amd drivers?

My guess is they are the people who believe what they read on the internet which was posted ages ago.

Or they bought a 7970 at launch like myself and had to put up with total rubbish for a couple of months. Nvidia are just as bad for some people but both companies have had their problems so to dismiss it out of hand is slightly ignorant :)

AMD pros:
Price
Performance
Mantle
Potential to flash to 290X depending on manufacturer/PCB
Potential free BF4 and silver code

AMD cons:
Heat -Same both sides really depends on cooler
Noise See above
Power -Correct nvidia cards use less power
Reference cooler only
Drivers could be better -Both just has bad each other, if anything Nvidia has been putting out some bad drivers lately.

Nvidia pros:
Performance (when OC'd) AMD cards also gain performance?[/B]
Better at OCing depending on card/cooler ????????
More features such as Shadowplay and "Experience" AMD has RadeonPro, and Gaming Evolved, RadeonPro 2.0 will also add GPU recording like shadow play.
Cooler - Depends on the cooler
Quieter - same again
Customer coolers
Decent free games - Great select of games also, even more selection with amd.

Nvidia cons:
Price - Correct
Stock clocks mean it doesn't beat 290

I added my thoughts.

Welcome to the forums Ollie :)

What is the rest of your system please?

CPU/MOBO/RAM/PSU/Monitor

What are the type of games you play?

:)

290 trounces a 780 so hard when overclocked it's not even funny.....

There a picture in the thread showing a 1200Mhz 290 beating a 1300Mhz 780 quite comfortably in Heaven

There are disadvantages to the reference 290 for sure, but it's all due to the cooler, nothing to do with the GPU.

Nvidia has some proprietary software features (namely PhysX), but then the 290 has TrueAudio, implemented in hardware.
