Everything is offensive if you try hard enough

Have anyone seen the Demolition Man (1993 film)? It takes place in the 2030s IIRC, and the people have been raised as a generation of pansies i.e. no alcohol or caffeine, swearing's not allowed (considered a crime) and sexual intercourse is simulated only. No snogging etc.

AIBU to think that we're becoming that generation?

Here's the latest example: "Good Friday just got better" - Tesco's bank holiday beer offer. If Tesco posted that advert 25 years ago, it would have been a non-issue. I still think it's a non-issue. Hell my granny is now in her late 80s, been a practising Christian since age 10 and she wouldn't give that ad much thought. She's got more important things to worry about, like looking after the house. But no, here we have the "offended" Demolition Man generation flocking over to Twitter making the beer ad their next hashag.

Is there really any point in being offended by such jokes? It just wastes energy, money and people's time - those who are posting on Twitter and staff members e.g. Tesco who are having to respond to their fragile minds. Make love, not War(craft). Watch some South Park.

Here, I end my rant with a small stockpile of quotes that I cut-and-pasted into my Google Keep from both here on OcUK\GD and Mumsnet\AIBU because we all love a bit of AIBU too :D

* Tom_ed1987 (OcUK) - The term Racist has been devalued to the point it's now near meaningless.
* tayto_0 (OcUK) - I'm not sure what bothers me more. The permanently offended or the idiots who continue to apologise to them!
* Diddums (OcUK) - Oh for **** sakes. I genuinely wonder if some people wake up in the morning and go "I wonder what I can be offended by today". Idiots.
* b0redj0rd (OcUK) - In that case, there are no Liberals in this country anymore. If you have a different opinion on something you are a target.
* MuseumOfCurry (Mumsnet) The pursuit of perfectly inoffensive speech and actions is a dangerous path indeed.
* FameNameGameLame (Mumsnet) Being friends with a racist doesn't make you a racist. Being friends with a murderer doesn't make you a murder. Being friends with milkman doesn't make you a milkman...
* wakeupandsmellthecoffee (Mumsnet) Your looking for stuff that just isn't there.
* Nasher (OcUK) - The hipster thing to do is be offended by anything you possibly can be at the moment. But thats ok, your allowed to be offended. Your not required to appologise either
* zippey (Mumsnet) - So it's time to use your common sense and stop being offended. (topic was OCD)
* 2014newme (Mumsnet) - People enjoy being offended and indignant. (topic was OCD)
* Jono (OcUK) - Remember folks, offence is always TAKEN, never GIVEN.
* NotStoppedAllDay (Mumsnet) - I can't get worked up about it. (topic was about Emma Watson posing 'topless' but wasn't really topless)

I thought that quite sad and amusing - I've many religious (as in actively practising) relatives and none of them would have given that Tesco ad a second glance let alone got upset about it - maybe at worse a passing shake of the head.

You've certainly tried hard enough. Notes on things you've cut and pasted from forums that you keep because you're offended about people getting offended? Really?

I think that advert is in poor taste and unnecessary. Offended, nope and I'll not stop shopping at Tesco or anything silly like that. I'll also forget about this very quickly. Bit like this thread.

Depends on how passionate you are and your circumstances. Complicated subject. I always think of this Stewart Lee clip on this subject.

It really is pathetic these days that people seem to be offended so easily As for religion, the world would be a much better place without it. No doubt people would blindlessly latch onto something else though.

Good luck with that since it is centuries old and wont change from country to country.

The way things are now we're one step away from being offended by looking at them. God forbid somebody looks at you/me/them the wrong way and reads it totally wrong.

We live in an age where everyone has their own digital soapbox to cry from, all of them vying for attention. One of the best ways to get attention at the moment is to claim you're offended by something, you'll get replies from PR folk and appear influential that way.

The internet wasn't like this before 2008. :/

Is it people are more offended, or just that the media are now more willing to post an article when any random person finds something offensive?

24 hour news - you need more stories than when it was just on TV 3 times a day and one paper print in the morning.

Well I got a 3 day ban here for... insulting 90% of the words population  So I agree entirely.

Apparently mods here don't like you insulting religion (or those who follow it).

To be honest with half the stuff that appears on my Facebook wall I just ignore now if its a case of someone just needs to MTFU and deal with it.

Grow up. You were punished for posting something which was offensive but you threw your toys out of the pram claiming it was a joke. I suggest you take your own advice and MTFU because your childish complaining is tiresome.

No one actually cares about religion anymore, but I'll take the public holiday - absolutely nothing to be offended about, do they get offended by kids eating chocolate too?
