hey guys,

im looking for a new power supply for my system soon as i want to upgrade my system to 970 SLI and want a power supply with more power so i have some head room for future upgrades.

so atm im using a antec true power 750w which as been used in another system before my current one.
i have had it for coming up to 4 years now, but it also makes a strange high pitch whine.

so im looking to get a EVGA 1000w, but i noticed the G1 and G2 model's but dont know what the difference is? but there is a £10 difference between them.

i know its going to be overkill for a i7 4790k and gtx970 G1's in SLI but i dont mind

so whats the difference guys?

The G1 only has 5 years warranty compared to the 10 years on the G2. All of the other G1 units are FSP built and have quad 12v rails instead of the single rail of the Superflower built units, but according to the RealhardtechX database the 1000w G1 is also a Superflower unit which I am not too sure about given that it only has a 5 year warranty. It definitely only has a single 12v rail though.

Personally I think you are wasting your money and should just get the G2 850w unit. Even that would run SLI 980's and still have power to spare.

ahh ok, i thought getting a 1000w would also be able to run quieter as well due to less stress on the unit.

but if the above is not true then the 850w will be a better choice then :)

The G2 is made by Superflower the G1 is not as good quality and uses a few brands. It's worth getting the G2 over the G1...

The 850W G2 will be more than enough for your needs.

Many people will always advise a lower wattage unit on the basis that your power draw will be within its limits. However peak efficiency's are usually far less than the max rated power spec of units. Plus and this is the main reason for me. A unit not being stressed will likely be far quieter and generate less heat if well within spec. There's also the added reassurance that as PSU's last many, many years that you have greater future flexibility.

Anyway that's always been my philosophy. So personally I'd have gone for the 1000w unit. :)

Funny, I was just coming in to this section to ask about these psus. I'm going to jump on this thread rather than make a new one for the same question.

I'm looking at the 850w G2. It's going to be powering an AMD 8320E, 990X motherboard, MSI GTX 670 Twin Frozr, 16GB of DDR3 1886, 2x ODDs, 2x SSDs in RAID 1. Also has to power an 8 port RAID controller, 2x 4 bay HDD cages with 8x HDDs.

Will 850 be enough, or should I be looking at 1000w?

The 850 will be more than enough. But I'd still go for the larger capacity personally. But that's just me and I've no idea what you may or may not wish to do further down the road.

EDIT: btw for actual reviews I usually find techpowerup and johnnyguru a good source for unit review specifics. Hope that helps. :)

Thanks Dazza. The above spec will probably be the MOST that will be in the machine for the foreseeable future. I'd done my maths on component TDP, but really wanted a second opinion before biting the bullet.

The 850w G2 could power your system twice without issue. You will be fine.. :)
