I've decided to go for the EVGA GeForce 7800 GS OC 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/DVI (AGP) - Retail (256-A8-E506-AX) (on the OC website). Will this be a decent card for games such as The Sims 2. GTA SA, Half-life 2 ect..

my current spec is;
Processor: AMD Sempron Processor 2800+, MMX, 3DNow @ 1.6GHz
Memory: 1024MB DDR
Motherboard: Asus K8V-X SE
Video: NVIDIA GeForce 6600 256MB AGP
O/S: Windows XP Home Edition

I'm not going to upgrade the rest of my system to after Christmas.

Has anyone else got this card??

Difficult to say with your processor as some of your games may be CPU limited but if you look at this link

http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics_2007.html?modelx=33&model1=722&model2=715&chart=318

your fps ought to more than double if cpu was very fast so it would be a good upgrade.

However, your cpu is really weak so you may not get all of this gain and the biggest worry might be that you get not gain whatsoever.

Unless somebody has/had a similar setup to you and can advise you. i'm not sure of the results and whether it would be worth the money.

Ideally see if you can find a 2nd hand A64 3700+ (or possibly A64 3400+ or Sempron 3400+). These are the fastest s754 desktop CPU's available.

Though i have also heard of people running the mobile Athlon 64 4000+ for socket 754 on desktop motherboards.

Though it should be noted that these CPU's may well be difficult to find.

You can still buy new Athlon 64's, been looking at a 3000+ 2.0ghz 512kb for a freinds setup, he's in the same boat as you want's a good bang for buck system to last a year or so. he's done this for £130.

semperon 2600+
Geil 512 mb
Nvidia 5700

to

Atlon 64 3000+
Geil 3x512 mb
x1650 xt ddr3
