EVGA GTX 470 Problem

i recently brought a zalman cooler for the evga gtx 470, hoping to turn my little hair dryer into a silent beast. but the problem is the screws of the stock cooler are really tight and its impossible for me to unscrew them without damaging the card or the screws. i had this problem before with my bfg 9800gtx, i had to destroy the cooler just to remove it. i dont want to do that this time because of the warranty.

so it leads me to ask, how does you guys solve this problem and what kind of screw drivers people use? i would preferable want a picture of the driver if its allowed to be posted here.

Try stress tetsing the card for five minutes before you try and remove the screws. I did this with mine and it seemed to help with the thread lock glue they put on each screw.

Try to use a good quality screw driver also helps. Be firm when pushing down but don't put too much weight onto the screw whilst turning. Be careful when removing the card once you've stressed it with furmark or similar as it'll be pretty hot.

i just tried sticking it into the heaven benchmark for 5 mins to heat it up to 80 degrees. but the screws are still just as stiff, but i will try it again and see if it gets any better

As Shadow says, a correct fitting screwdriver is essential. When i did mine they all came out fine apart from one that was a close call, i did have to apply quite a bit of pressure though. It is best to do it on a flat solid surface like a worktop or table.

i am doing this on my wooden desk. maybe my screwdrivers are too useless...i dont get why they have to glue the screws

what screw drivers you guys recommend? is it alright to post the link here?

i may have stripped the last few screws due to too much force put into it. is there a way to still remove them?

and i am not pleased to see unhelpful people suggest some nonsense

Yes a good screw driver a must, but just tighting the screw a touch as this will brake the bond if there is any kind of Loctite on and make it easier to get the screw out.

why don't you buy a small screwdriver set. I saw one at ***** (can't say place - forum rules) Clue: don't shop for it, ***** it. I got a mini set and a normal set and that should fulfill all your future needs. Drill size i don't know - sorry

1.5 - 2mm drill bit go slowly because if u slip kiss your card bye bye

U really should have decent sets of screwdrivers in the house you being a man and all that, crap tools will cost u in the long run

It was just a joke...

Put a tiny amount of super glue on the screw head (careful not to get any on the card) then place the screwdriver in the super glue and let it dry. This will give you more purchase if you haven't completely stripped the screws.

failing that drill carefully or use a hammer ;)

i do have good screw drivers, but i didnt realize i had them until its too late.

i will try the super glue, if it fails may god help me with the drill

be careful, use a drill bit smaller than the one you initially want to use just to be safe and go very slowly. good luck :)
