EVGA Pascal cards hotspot problem

I personally think that the issue has been more than adequately explained. As a few folks on here have suggeste and now pretty much proven by the gamersnexus article, that the issue has been with a small number of cards and it's the odd faulty component on the pcb's that have blown. This can happen in any electronic device.

I'm not quite sure why certain folks keep talking about cards "setting on fire" or "exploding". It's complete nonsense! Basically the odd component has gone pop, sometimes a bit dramatically but not aware of any pc's going up in flames, or people being injured. After extensive reading about this issue ... I've only come across ONE guy who has even had any other components damaged because a cap on his graphics card exploded and even here, EVGA is talking with the guy regarding compensation.

There's even some nutter over in the EVGA forum that's claiming to be being collecting "evidence" for some sort of legal action.!!! Think some people want to stop taking whatever mind enhancing drugs they are taking and get a grip ;)

They should close this thread now. The whole heat issue was blown way out of proportion. The thermal pads EVGA sent me are working amazing. As others have said it's no different then any other GPU release.

Having read quite abit about it now and watched the different videos (including the latest from gamernexus) nobody is yet to explain why these card's were/are setting on fire!!

Seriously evga are currently claiming there cards catching on fire is normal (within tech spec's) and in general everyone is concentrating on heat/thermal pads but if it is not thermal pad/heat related why are these cards exploding?

I dont think you have read the gamer nexus article causes it's explained in it. Thermal issue is different from the exploding issue. The thermal issue isn't an issue but they offered pads and a bios update to improve things for the sake customer satisfaction. They could have done nothing (and would probably have faced less criticism if they did)

The exploding cards issue is a rare problem that affects only a tiny percentage of users and was down a bad batch of components somewhere in the supply chain. EVGA states that it's 200 parts per million, 0.02%. Same as previous generations. Probably around the failure rare of other manufacturers, GPUs etc.

Because the thermal (non) issue affected everyone it generated much more uproar than the exploding components did. So it garnered more attention. Combined with how everyone on the internet craves attention and will cry injustice at the slightest thing you get the current situation where people are more likely to post their card has died to due to a bad part to get their 15 minutes of fame and it just fuels the fire.

Amen to that

Exactly !

I've had cards from Asus that have had their VRM's explode in my case, The 980 Ti Matrix Platinum that I had for a total of 10 minutes before it went BOOM, I didn't even have chance to install the drivers :p and then the 980 Strix which fried itself somehow and I bet I'm not the only 1 but this is typical of the internet that people focus on 1 negative aspect and then it snowballs into something much much bigger.

It's 1 of the reasons I really hate the internet.

Nice to see you have you're issue resolved. I have not got the pads yet.

I suspect thats may be because I have a classified and evega have only just recently posted install instructions (which are different from both 1080 ftw and 1070)

Also no instuctional vids or any testing as yet on the classified.

Personaly I prefer to get information here rather than on evega forums and whilst its nice to see everything is fine with you and you have everything done and dusted its not the case for everyone.

I'm also on a Classified and still waiting on the pads to arrive, Applied nearly a month ago.

Anyone with a classified.... I'd be tempted to give EVGA Ben a prod and see what the hold up is (assuming you have not already).

Nah, better to keep it one thread rather than having threads pop up all over the place.

Not really. The BIOS update is a standard thing but the DIY pad fitting isn't.....

I've just applied to have the thermal pads for my 1080 FTW. I want to download the BIOS (I'm assuming it's fine to install bios even though I don't have pads yet), but not sure which one to download, there's two for the FTW, one has 'DT' in the name, any ideas?

The DT version is reference clock version of the FTW.

Get the non DT version as you have the standard FTW GPU.

Think it could due to EVGA adding more thermal pads in the kit for the memory chips under the base plate.
So far I've been waiting 3 weeks so far but I don't have any problems with my card at all.

I've had my 1080 SC cards for 5months now - 0 issues. I have only applied the Vbios update. The Thermalpads have still not shipped from eVGA , and I'm not sure I'll go through the hassle applying them.

Zero issues on mine too, but I've caved and ordered the thermal pads, and applied the vbios update in the meantime. So far the vbios update only makes my rig slightly louder, but drops the GPU temps by a good few degrees so I'm happy with that at least.

Still waiting for the pads and the powerlinks from EVGA. Then I'll disassemble both my cards and rewire everything etc in one hit (plus add another SSD for good measure - they're hard to access with the GPUs in the way).

My classified has been fine at stock but unstable with even a moderate overclock on memory.

Only had it for a few days before this issue kicked off so left out the overclocking until pads turn up.

Actual got no idea what the vrm temps are on the classified either pre fix or post fix as evega is playing secret squirrel with its testing and validation results, its focus is entirly on the 1080 ftw and 1070, which has a different layout and an entirly different fix.
