They can be had for little over £60, and the 8800GTS cost me £350 from OCUK two years back.
Did you buy the card from OcUK?
The 9600 GT is even a bit faster than the 8800 GTS. We have done tests in our lab, but the press came to the same result. Please find a performance comparison here: http://www.computerbase.de/artikel/...e_9600_gt_sli/24/#abschnitt_performancerating The 9600 GT is always ahead of the 8800 GTS-640, especially in DX10 applications. They don't tested with 1920x1200, but with 1680x1050 and 8x AA which needs a lot more framebuffer memory compared to 1920x1200 with less than 8x AA. While the 9600 GT has 128 MB less memory, the memory is used more efficiently with the improved compression algorithms of all G9x GPUs. The count of shaders is smaller, too (64 instead of 96) but the shaders are clocked faster and they also benefit from improvements of the G9x architecture. With having pipeline stalls reduced, the data throughput per clock has been improved in the G9x GPU series. Of course, what counts is the real-world-performance, not a technical explanation. The 9600 GT got more power than the 8800 GTS-640. Please try your 9600 GT out.
