*FACEPALM*
Seriously guys? With 16 cores, 32 threads, 96GB RAM, 3 way 16x SLI/Crossfire how the heck can any of you see this logic?
I'd personally kill for this new board and just a couple of plain 8 core Xeons. It may not be a worthwhile investment for everyone else, but I...I'd like to see what kind of numbers I can get with x264 on my lossless profile.
I'll always be keeping the SR series in mind for when I can afford one of those systems though. It'd most likely only be as soon as 20 cores/socket are the norm for Xeons though.
I think you've missed the point slightly.
The SR-2 was legendary BECAUSE it could overclock a dual CPU setup. Now of course EVGA are going to do a socket SB-E follow-up, but the whole point behind the SR-2 has been lost because SB-E Xeons are locked down.
IF Intel do release unlocked SB-E Xeons then we have a different ball game, otherwise there is simply no point in buying the SR-X when the Asus Z9PE-D8 WS isn't much more expensive than a R4E (it's been listed online as low as £420) AND will probably be infinitely easier to get hold of.
If you want a dual SB-E workstation beast then I reckon Asus is the much better option.
Now let's just see if Intel DO unlock those Xeons...
