Evo X - Questions...

After years of waiting, the time is fast approaching for a new motor circa April-May. The initial idea was a Hawkeye Impreza STI or a Evo 9 FQ300 (or FQxxx)...

...I then suddenly realised I could potentially consider the Evo X. I love the front styling, though the rear does look a bit "Mazda-rish".

Questions for those that own them, as I believe a few of you do?

  • Whats all of this SST about? I hate autos. How does the gearing work, I'm presuming flappy paddles?
  • From what I can read, it appears the FQ300 is ONLY available in SST, not manual?
  • What are the differences between FQxxx revisions, barring the obvious BHP differences?
  • Any comparisons with the Evo 9 or Impreza Hawkeye would be gladly sincerely appreciated

Just go drive one.

SST is a DSG style box, so flappy paddles. Very good by all accounts but they don't like heat, so if you modify the car, you'll have to think about cooling. If you can afford it, go for the 330 over the 300.

Very very quick car.

The FQ300 was available in manual as well. Not sure if there's any new manuals left now though.
I think it was available in GS and GSR trim too. GSR having the better toys.

Other than that they're the same car.

SST was available in 300 and eventually 330. Expensive if you're going for really high power but I think a few guys are running them around the 400bhp mark.

Avoid SST, only good if car is mapped plus it can throw big bills.

I've driven umpteen imprezas include the Spec C and D hawk eyes. Without a doubt the EVO is better particular on UK roads. Power wise, 400BHP comes easy, HKS hard pipes, milltek turbo decat system and ecutek will take a 300 too circa 400ish.

Would agree the Evo is a better car than the Subaru, but it does throw up some big bills and the servicing is a lot more expensive, so take that into account when making the decision.

Then watch the rods fly.... Or could be lucky and never happen

Sst ok now days, just costs more once you hit 380bhp

I don't think the evo 10 service intervals are the same as the previous models.
I think they're 10,000 miles as opposed to every 4,500?

The X is every 10,000 miles / 1yr and cost about £240 if you supply your own oil, this is not expensive servicing cost.

Extended warranty is about £700 per year with Mitsubishi if your worried about bills, but the manual is pretty reliable.
