Evolution & GMail ?

I have kind of given up yes, but if you know, you know....
Thunderbird has cured it, I have done it in that, but I would like to use Evolution.
I feel that Evolution cannot do it however.
I find it funny that people tell me to go with debian because its this or its that and yet the programs are not fully functioning, forcing me to use other apps anyway.. Totally defeating the whole idea of being fully free!!!
But please, if you know, then Im all ears yes.

Yes, but Ubuntu takes Debian, and
1 - Gets the hardware working ( Just as the user would have to anyway )
2 - Offers software that actually works ( As in my case, because Evolution does not do GMail )
I mean, you have a Debian setup there yes?
Can you actually and honestly say that its still 100% open source? Are all the drivers fully open source and is all the software still 100% open source?
If it is, then I seriously feel that you are a very rare person.
My Laptop for example needs the ATI Drivers to have decent 3D, and the IPW2200 Wireless driver also.
And as I said about GMail, I cannot use evolution as it does not support changing the POP / SMTP ports so I have had to use TBird... Im guessing this is very much the case for most users.
Plus of course this attitude that Debian is 100% stable and I get that I really do, but in these days of people wanting the latest and most up to date PC setups, using an older O/S does seem strange?
I suppose its the same thing as people wanting to use XP instead of Vista then because XP has a proven track record, just like Debian has?

I never once said that Linux was bad. Never once.
I have used Linux since Mandrake 5.1 and even my 20 year old Atari TT came with SVR4 ( some time before Linux was around ) I use Sabayon religiously on my Desktop. My first delve into the working of Liux was Gentoo, way before we had live distros that would do teh work for us, and that took me over a month of cimpiling just to get a basic KDE setup running, so Im not afraid of getting dirty.
What I am afraid of, is liking a new up to date setup that works fine straight out of the box, and then trying out the parent of this only to find that while I like it more than its child, very little actually works, and the only way to get it to work, is to use non-free drivers and software, and this has completely defeated the whole reason to use Debian over ubuntu in the first place.
Thats not a dislike for Debian, or a moan at debian in any way, its merely an observation, and one that I recon a lot more people have to do than will admit.

I have yet to try the extra COLON and Number at the Server info, and trying IMAP instead of POP is somehting that I had been tampering with but I have been told thet Google does not do IMAP.. Only POP.
Clearly I was mis-told there then?
Choices? Like what? Buying a different Wireless adapter that Debian does support with "FREE" Drivers?
But then why pay for something that I already have?

Sure, I could use the Ethernet, this is working straight off, but again, defeats the reason to use the Laptop.
And again with the ATI Drivers. There are still no fully working Open Source drivers are there... Not yet anyway
But please, if the choices allow me to use the hardware in the laptop then Im all ears
