Evolution & GMail ?

I have kind of given up yes, but if you know, you know....

Thunderbird has cured it, I have done it in that, but I would like to use Evolution.

I feel that Evolution cannot do it however.

I find it funny that people tell me to go with debian because its this or its that and yet the programs are not fully functioning, forcing me to use other apps anyway.. Totally defeating the whole idea of being fully free!!!

But please, if you know, then Im all ears yes.

generally because ubuntu is based on Debian
so why not use something higher on the tree?

not to mention i have this subconscious thing that i automatically dislike anything that's too popular or over a certain popularity...

like naruto and bleach

Yes, but Ubuntu takes Debian, and

1 - Gets the hardware working ( Just as the user would have to anyway )

2 - Offers software that actually works ( As in my case, because Evolution does not do GMail )

I mean, you have a Debian setup there yes?

Can you actually and honestly say that its still 100% open source? Are all the drivers fully open source and is all the software still 100% open source?

If it is, then I seriously feel that you are a very rare person.

My Laptop for example needs the ATI Drivers to have decent 3D, and the IPW2200 Wireless driver also.
And as I said about GMail, I cannot use evolution as it does not support changing the POP / SMTP ports so I have had to use TBird... Im guessing this is very much the case for most users.

Plus of course this attitude that Debian is 100% stable and I get that I really do, but in these days of people wanting the latest and most up to date PC setups, using an older O/S does seem strange?

I suppose its the same thing as people wanting to use XP instead of Vista then because XP has a proven track record, just like Debian has?

Ah well.

Already have done that. Its got all the info I can put in, but it still has never been able to grab my EMails... It just hangs there!

Nine out of ten of your threads are you complaining about how bad Linux is, when evidently the problems exist between the keyboard and the chair.

Stop blaming Linux for your lack of understanding. Of course Evolution supports specifying custom ports - you just don't know how to do it; is that Evolution's fault?

A quick minute spent Googling will give you your answer.

I never once said that Linux was bad. Never once.

I have used Linux since Mandrake 5.1 and even my 20 year old Atari TT came with SVR4 ( some time before Linux was around ) I use Sabayon religiously on my Desktop. My first delve into the working of Liux was Gentoo, way before we had live distros that would do teh work for us, and that took me over a month of cimpiling just to get a basic KDE setup running, so Im not afraid of getting dirty.

What I am afraid of, is liking a new up to date setup that works fine straight out of the box, and then trying out the parent of this only to find that while I like it more than its child, very little actually works, and the only way to get it to work, is to use non-free drivers and software, and this has completely defeated the whole reason to use Debian over ubuntu in the first place.

Thats not a dislike for Debian, or a moan at debian in any way, its merely an observation, and one that I recon a lot more people have to do than will admit.

I have yet to try the extra COLON and Number at the Server info, and trying IMAP instead of POP is somehting that I had been tampering with but I have been told thet Google does not do IMAP.. Only POP.

Clearly I was mis-told there then?

Thats a choice. There are other ways.

Choices? Like what? Buying a different Wireless adapter that Debian does support with "FREE" Drivers?

But then why pay for something that I already have?

Not using Wireless?
Sure, I could use the Ethernet, this is working straight off, but again, defeats the reason to use the Laptop.

And again with the ATI Drivers. There are still no fully working Open Source drivers are there... Not yet anyway

But please, if the choices allow me to use the hardware in the laptop then Im all ears

Well it's supported IMAP since late 2007... maybe you were mistold two or more years ago... but then, things change.

If you follow that guide you will find that it works fine. You can use the 'COLON' () trick with POP too if you like, as it will probably work just as well.

However, I'd go with IMAP because then you never have to worry about backing up your e-mail (though admittedly you could just use POP and say leave a copy of the messages on the server). IMAP is also more feature rich.

You have a really funny way of asking for help. You come across as if you're having a go and making demands.

I feel it's almost as if you expect us to apologise for the lack of OpenSource ATi drivers... after all, we promised you a great time with Debian. I'm sorry that no OpenSource drivers exist for your wireless card.

You either have two options (other than complaining like you are now):

1. Carry out work to get things as you want them within Linux. Be it developing drivers of your own, helping out on already running projects, or indeed going with the 'non-free' drivers and actually getting on with your life.
2. Go and buy Windows.

At the end of the day people have spent days/months/years developing software for anybody to use for free, and you're on here complaining that it's simply not good enough that they've neglected to develop drivers for your wireless chipset?

It's just wierd

clearly missing the point, you chose that item that isnt supported OOTB! Then rant when it dont work.

I would just point out that it isn't Linux that doesnt support the brand of hardware you have, it is the hardware manufacturer who doesn't support Linux. Windows provides no drivers whatsoever themselves, they rely fully on the manufacturer to provide those. At least Linux developers make the effort to support hardware directly if the manufacturer doesn't offer free open source drivers.

No sorry.

Im coming across all wrong. That I agree is my mistake.

This is NOT how I am... I am merely pointing out that not everything is good.

I use Linux and have done for years, I love it, and some things I have absolutely no problms with, soime thigns I do. I have never used any form of Debian based distro ever, but I have found that ubuntu is great however when moving to debain, Im finding that a lot of my LapTop hard ware is not supported on Debian but its fine with other Distros.

My Desktop stuff that isnt supported has been easy to sort out. I have been using Sabayon for some time on my Desktop... Maybe Sabayon should be used on my LapTop also?

Clearly missing the point?

Yes, ok granted, but I only have this issue with Debian.
