Howdy :)

First of all, please don't let this thread descend into an argument between smokers and non-smokers; everyone is entitled to their own choices, and that's not what this post is about :)

I've tried a few times now in the past six years to stop smoking, some more successful than others! Me and the missus are going to quit (again), and I know I'll find it a lot harder. It's just routine, and even with patches I get irritable, tired and very hungry! Previously I've tried cold turkey (awful, awful idea), and patches. Patches were fairly successful, but I still somehow ended up back on the 20 a day I'm on now.

What did you guys do to quit successfully?

i gave up about a year ago now.

cold turkey
became an irritable, angry person for about two weeks.

after the third week i never even thought about it.
i occasionally get the urge when i see people smoking but the smell is really offputting to me now.

i put the money i would have spent on cigs into a seperate current account.
it pays for my pc hardware, games and my car.
most of which i probably would not have if i was still smoking.

just set yourself a goal and stick to it.

good luck uv - let us know how you get on :)

I tried with Will Power. It works wonders.

Not exactly the most helpful reply now is it.

If your problem is routine then you have to break the routine before you'll succeed? Try and find some replacement, feel like a smoke. Have a tic tac or someone to suck on. Can't remember the exact figure but it takes 48hours or something for your body to get rid of the nicotine after which it's a mental need for nicotine rather than your body telling you it's nicotine time.

Is Will Power an ironic product name, or did you guys honestly just cold turkey it without any nicotine replacement?

Went cold on them. It was difficult because you felt like you had more free time, but doing something else like going for a walk helped.

If you really want to give up you can do with will power alone. As said above, find something to replace it with. I kept a bottle of water nearby at all times and had a few swigs every time I felt the need. In a few weeks you wont even think about it.

Have a read here. Good luck.

nasal spray and will power for me, been around three and a half years now, was hard for the first few weeks but after the third or fourth week you settle and its full steam ahead. hardest thing was out on the drink but that hasnt been an issue for a good while now.

I went cold Turkey from 40+ a day plus Cigars just over a Month ago, put on a bit of weight even though I am eating the same and doing the same activities which is a bit confusing. I was irritable the first fortnight (First few hours of being awake were very bad!!), now I'm just suffering really bad heart-burn and a sore throat. Unbelievable the money I'm saving though! :D

There is a guy on the forums whom I'm sure will pop up who made a blog during his time quitting smoking.

I've set my date to quit as the 16th.

Go to the doctors and get a prescription for 'Zyban' - I quit 5 years and found it very easy despite being a heavy smoker. Had to go to weekly smoking cessation classes for two months with lots of people who were clearly one foot in the grave but was worth it.

Will power, been quit for about 6 years. The need/want for a cig never goes away, the only difference is that the feeling is less intense and less frequent the longer you keep off them. After 6 years I probably only crave for a cig once every 4 or 5 months, and it's usually only triggered when I see other people smoking or if I've had a drink.

If you're prepared to put up with the pain for six months to a year then you'll stop no problem at all

I smoked for almost 20 years and gave up for my 35th birthday as I could litterally feel the harm it was starting to do.

No one thought I could do it (even my mother who told me what the cancer ward is like at her job...)

I was in India with someone I looked up to who used to be a heavy smoker and we all asked how he did it...

He said you have to DECIDE that you want to.

I tried many times over the years - but I didn't really make my mind up...

I have also found that if I get stressed, not to use that as an excuse to light up, that's rubbish...

Also admit to myself that I liked the drug and live with it rather than hate it.

But to be honest - not smoking is not as hard as I thought that it would be. I made a massive deal about it in my mind which again made it harder than it should have been.

My 2p's worth!

I bought some fruit flavoured nicotine gum from Boots, after the packet was finished with i didn't need a ciggy at all. Throughout using nicotine gum, you get this horrible strong nicotine taste every few pieces of gum which starts to put you off it, it's been 3 years now since i quit and i don't crave for a ciggy at all.

Just cold turkey, no nicotine replacements. A few days of wanting to light up all the time and then the urge slowly went away. I used to say to myself well that’s one week lets do another. Then the targets stop and guess what so does the smoking.

Sure there are temptations but it’s the will power that keeps you going on. So it's not an ironic name as it's actually what you use to stop.

I quit for 6 months once but im back on them again now..

I had to stop going out to pubs and stuff as much as the urge to have a fag with the drink was just too much.

i wish you the best of luck .
