OK, so I've suddenly noticed that windows is saying only 4GB usable out of 6GB. Seems a common problem with X58 boards. I've tried different BIOS's, reseated CPU and RAM sticks (and swapped them around - always same channel that's FUBAR'ed) all to no avail. Unfortunately the board is around 2 years old so I think I'm stuffed wrt RMA'ing (not bought from OCUK). Anyone got any other ideas?

If not think I'm gonna switch to Sandy Bridge in 4 weeks. Gonna sell my i7, RAM and GPU and go with integrated graphics as I only game on my PS3 and use the PC for video encoding these days. Shouldn't actually cost too much that way...

The work around I've come up with for it is to save your current BIOS settings, then when the 2GB disappears reload Safe Defaults, save, then reload your own save. Doing that resets it back to 6GB again. I've never been able to get to the bottom of what causes it to lose the 2GB in the first place but it does it so infrequently on mine that it's not an issue for me.

Tried it - no good. Thanks anyway.

SB here we come...
