Exceeding RAM size limits

Just wondering - what would happen if I try installing RAM modules greater than the size rated by my motherboard?

My four DDR3 slots (board takes either DDR2 or DDR3) are rated to 2GB per module. What would happen if I stuck in say 2x4GB or even 4x4GB? Would it just refuse work?

I must confess I don't really understand why different AM3 boards have different RAM limits if the memory controller is on the CPU.

sometimes mobo manufacturers release BIOS updates that allow for larger stick sizes. you sure your board can't take more?

although 4GB sticks are still stupidly expensive, so I'd just stick to 8GB total. also, do you need more than 8? I do, for rendering, but most people don't.

Nope just wondering. Here's the details of my motherboard anyway: http://www.jetwaycomputer.com/spec/HA08-COMBOL.pdf

Just tried running Crucial system scanner but it doesn't recognise it.

I don't think I'll actually need 8GB for the immediate future but have heard that running 4 DIMMs can limit but overclocks and I'm currently running at a 282 FSB (can get up to 300 with RAM overvolt) with 2x2GB DDR2.

I asked Crucial's technical support what they thought and they stated that it simply won't work.
