Excel help - Freezing a column

I know you can freeze panes (horizontal) but i also want to be able to freeze the first column so when i scroll across it stays in view.

How do i?

Reality

Select the cell to the right of where you want to freeze the column.

Go to the Window tab on the main menu bar and then select 'Freeze Panes'
